Introduction to organizational
theory and design

What comes to your mind when

you think of an organization
Definition
Organization is a social entity
that is goal directed, designed
as deliberately structured and
coordinated activity system,
linked to the external system
Organization therefore is not
just building or set of policies
and procedures but also made
of people and their relationship
with one another
Organization has a purpose
Interaction of Employees for
common goals
Importance of organization
1. Organizations are a means to an end

2. Organizations have played a significant role in the last

100 years
3. Produce goods and services efficiently

4. Facilitate innovation

5. Adapt to and influence a changing environment

6. Create value for owners, customers, and employees

7. Accommodate ongoing challenges of diversity, ethics,

and the motivation and coordination of employees
Dimensions of Organization Design
Structural Dimensions
Provide internal inside of an
organization
 Formalization
 Specialization
 Hierarchy of Authority
 Centralization
Cont…
Contingency Factors
Larger elements that may influence
structural dimension
Size
Organizational technology
Environment
Goals and strategy
Culture
A Good mixture, information of
both contingency and
structural dimensions can be
adjusted together in order to
gain quality results
Organic vs. Mechanistic
Mechanistic –
characterized by machine-
like standard rules and
procedures with clear
authority
Organic – design of
organization is looser, free-
flowing, and adaptive
Organization Design Depends upon:

 Structure
 Tasks/Roles
