Introduction
• This week, we will start looking at organisation
structures and levels and principles of
leadership

Objectives of Management
• Objectives of organisation structures:
• Economic and efficient performance of the
organisation and levels of resource utilisation
• Monitoring the activities of the organisation
• Accountability for areas of work undertaken by
groups and individual members of the organisation
• Co-ordination of different parts of the organisation
and different areas of work
• Flexibility to respond to future demands
• Adaptation to internal and external environments
• Social satisfaction of members
Why is this last point important?

• Known as a ‘functional’ structure
• Often considered as the standard structure in
private sector organisations – but in fact can
apply across all sectors

• On the handout, three levels:


• Upper Level [Strategic management]
• Middle Level [Tactical management]
• Lower Level [Operational management]

Principles of Tactical
Leadership
1. Concerned with the here and now
2. Short term decisions and risk management for
immediate gains
3. Leaders must balance the needs of the team
members with the needs of the mission or situation
4. Highly transactional – this leader does not have
many of the tools of the transformational leadership
at his / her disposal

Principles of Operational
Leadership
1. Focus on building the structures and systems that allow
the strategic leaders visions and objectives to be achieved
2. Provide a framework for action by the tactical leaders
3. Ability to give intrinsic rewards, e.g. team recognition,
competitive positioning, more interesting or vital projects
4. Develop or enhance highly motivated teams with high
morale and cohesiveness
5. Ensure the proper tools and systems are in place for
teams to achieve their assigned tasks and functions
