CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT

• To achieve the safe use of chemicals and to control the hazards.

• Understand the essential hazards of chemicals stored in the
facility and used in application processes of for other functions
(e. g. hygiene chemicals used in sanitary areas.)
RESPONSIBILITIES
•Employer shall
Explain to all IMPIC employees the components of an effective labeling
system.
Describe in detail how to label hazardous chemicals to Supervisor.
•Supervisor in-charge shall
Monitor that workers are following the precautions against the use of
specific chemicals.
•HSE Officer shall
Conduct necessary training regarding awareness, labeling and precautionary measures with the use
of chemicals.
Inspect all chemicals are properly labeled and properly taken care of.
Recommend substitutes/changes in chemicals being used if necessary for effective implementation
as well as safety concerns.
HAZARDOUS MATERIAL GUIDE TO
PROPER LABELING
• Labels shall contain the following information; a) identification of hazardous
component, b) potential health and physical hazard rating, c) hazard symbol
and risk phrases, d) precautions and PPE, and d) first aid treatment procedure.
• Labels are employee’s signposts on the road to safety around hazardous
materials. Together with Safety Data Sheets, labels provide employee with
information needed to work safely with hazardous materials.
• Improperly accomplished labels are virtually useless. Guidelines are
established as an important tool in proper labeling. Listed in the order that they
appear in the list of identified hazardous materials are the guidelines and are
as follows:
COLOR / NUMBER CODES
ON LABELS
• Two commonly used systems with colors and numbers on
labels are the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)
system and the color-bar system. NFPA system is represented
by the diamond-shaped label.
STORAGE

• Chemical should be stored safety and properly to provide a safe work place.
• Chemical storage room should be in good ventilation to keep humidity and
temperature at optimal levels. No direct sunlight on chemicals.
• All chemicals should be according to SDS (Safety Data Sheet) information.
• Abstracted/ Simplified SDS in local language should be available in storage room.
Information includes:
i. Chemical product identification & company name
ii. Hazards identification
iii. First aid measures
iv. Accidental release measures
v. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
vi. Toxicological Information
HANDLING

• Clear instruction and safety precaution (in local languages)

on chemical handling should be clearly stated in the working
area.
• Crew should check the expiry date of chemicals before use.
• Crew should review SDS and understand the hazard before
using a chemical.
WASTE MANAGEMENT

Include the activities and actions required to manage waste

from its inception to its final disposal. Also includes the
collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste, together
with monitoring and regulation of the waste management
process.
WHAT ARE WASTE?

Waste is unwanted or useless materials by the company that is

to be discarded. It may also be called rubbish, trash, garbage or
junk.
KINDS OF WASTE
• Solid waste-waste in solid forms, domestic, commercial and industrial waste.
 Ex. Plastic, Styrofoam containers, Bottles, Can, Papers, Scrap iron and others.
• Liquid waste- waste in liquid form
Ex. Domestic washings, chemical oils, waste water, manufacturing industries and other sources.
Classification of Waste according to their properties
• Bio-degradable- can be degraded (paper, wood, fruits and others.)
• Non-Biodegradable- Cannot be degraded (plastics, bottles, old machines, cans, Styrofoam containers
and others.)

Classification of Waste according to their effects on Human Health and the

Environment
• Hazardous waste- Substances unsafe to use commercially, industrially, agriculturally, or economically
and have any of the following properties: ignitability, corrosively, reactivity and toxicity.
• Non-hazardous waste- Substances safe to use commercially, industrially, agriculturally, or
economically and do not have any of those properties mentioned aboved.
TRANSPORT AND DISPOSAL
IMPIC will comply with client’s requirements on Transport and
Disposal of generated waste based on its type and
classification.
ACCUMULATION AREA

• Area(s) designated to be used for the temporary storage of

wastes prior to shipment to permitted disposal facilities.
