INTIMATE PARTNER

VOILENCE (IPV)
WHAT IS IPV ?
Intimate partner violence is one of the most common forms of violence against
women and includes physical, sexual, emotional abuses and controlling behaviours
by an intimate partner.

 
Forms of IPV ?
Physical Abuses:
slapping,kicking,hitting or beating.
Controlling behaviours including isolating a person from family and friends; monitoring their
movements; and restricting access to financial resources, employment, education or medical care.
Emotional abuses humiliation, intimidation, constant insults ,threats to harm the partner’s beloved ones and children.

Sexual abuses:
including forced sexual intercourse and other forms of sexual coercion.

Status of IPV in NEPAL .


IN NEPAL: from 2010 to mid-September 2018, a
total of 251 cases-117 homicides, 108 suicides and 26
acid attacks-have been recorded .

Domestic violence is the highest reported category of violence


against women as it makes upto 65% (1140). The data shows
women suffered violence from their husband (76% of
perpetrators) and family members (24% of perpetrators).
Why don’t women leave
violent partners?
• Women had little knowledge about domestic violence and abuse
and thought that their partner’s behaviour was all their fault, so
they felt they should try harder to make it work.
•Women, particularly from minority ethnic groups, were under
cultural and family pressure to stay with their husband.

Consequences of IPV:
1.Death, illness, injury and
disability — domestic and
family violence is the leading
cause of death, illness and
disability for women aged
under 45.

HOW CAN WE put an end to IPV ?

Starting teaching the boys from an early age about respecting the girls and
treating them well.

Educating the girl from an early age to raise to their voices against any sort
of abuses or misbehaviours

Starting the effort of change from our own neighbourhood.

strengthen women’s civil rights related to divorce, property, child support


and custody.
