SCALEBAN
SCALEBAN WORKING PRINCIPLE
The working principle of Scaleban is very simple & proven. It incorporates use of
Galvanic Principle, Chemical characteristics of water/fluid and fluid Dynamic
Scaleban exploits solubility characteristics of Calcium and Magnesium salts in
fluid with change in its pH value.
Scaleban locally increase pH value of water/fluid before it reaches high
temperature zone and then precipitates out hardness causing salts as
water/fluid flows through SCALEBAN.

SCALEBAN makes use of Galvanic principle by locally enhancing the pH value

of feed water/fluid . Due to the Galvanic action the core get negatively charged
and attracts the lightest ion present in the fluid i.e.Hydrogen ion toward
itself. The ralationship betweeen pH of water/fluid and H+ ion is expressed by the
formula pH directly perposnal 1/H+.
Thus ,with the concentration of H+ ion becoming comparatively less in the
water/fluid inside the equipment ,pH value increase ,there by precipitating
Calcium and Magnesium before it comes in contact with hot tubes.
Consequently ,once the precipitation of these hardness causing salts has take
place ,further precipitation due to temperture is not possible

SCALEBAN precipitates out Calcium and Magnesium bicarbonates in the

colloidal form of Argonite crystals much before the water/fluid attains the critical
temprature of super saturation due to its coming in contact with hot tubes
CASE STUDY OF M/S. NAHAR INDUSTRY, PUNJAB FOR UTILISATION OF ETP TREATED
EFFLUENTS IN POWER PLANT COOLING TOWER BY USING SCALEBAN EQUIPMENT
WITHOUT THE USE OF RO AND MEE TO ACHIEVE ZLD IN A SUSTAINABLE MANNER

COMPANY PROFILE & BACKGROUND

NAHAR Group of Companies also known as OWM Group is a leading

industrial house of northern India, continuously growing and diversifying its
activities for economic prosperity of its shareholders and stakeholders, while
engaging itself to the well being of Community and environment.
Starting in 1949 as an small wooll worsted spinner and Hosiery
manufacturer, Group has grown itself as leading textile giant of Northern
India manufacturing with a group turnover of US 1.05 billion.

CHALLENGE:
UTILISATIONS OF EFFLUENTS AS MAKE UP WATER IN COOLING
TOWER OF POWER PLANT.
M/s Nahar Industries have a very big textile unit at dt Lalru , Punjab
with a captive power plant of 2 x 12 MW & 5MW capacity. This unit
generates about 500 meter cube of effluent per day which needs to be
efficiently disposed off on a daily basis.
Presently there are conventional methods available for handling of effluents namely RO plant for usable water
recovery and Multi Effect Evaporator for handling of reject water from RO . This equipment entails huge CAPEX,
high OPEX coupled with tedious & regular maintenance. Hence there is great deal of hesitation by clients in
adopting these technologies & they are always in search of cost effective and economically viable alternative

SOLUTION
Scaleban Equipment approached client and our technology was explained to them in
detail. We proposed for directly using ETP water as make up in cooling tower. As it
normally happens, our claims of using ETP water to be used directly into cooling tower
without any treatment was met with disbelief as well as skepticism. However, after
visiting sites of few of our clients where ETP water was being used as make up in
cooling tower and seeing performance of cooling system using Scaleban equipments
over a number of years and client satisfaction over performance and inter-alia benefits
derived by using scaleban, they decided to place order for 1No.12 MW power plant &
associated accessories.

A total of 13 No.s Scaleban Equiment were supplied and were installed on 20th july,
2017.The plant was started with scaleban on 27/7/17.
Initially it was decided to use Raw water as make up water in cooling tower without blow-
down to increase the total hardness and TDS in cooling water circuit and closely
monitoring performance for a few days at High Hardness and TDS. Gradually, ETP
treated Water( Denim Plant) to be added and based on results observed, total effluent
will be utilized as make up in cooling tower.

To observe & monitor cooling tower & associated

equipment functioning with Scaleban following things were
inspected:
Scaling: Started the trial with ETP treated water containing
maximum 7900ppm of TDS and circulation TDS was maintained
53000ppm. After 160 days of operation12 MW unit-2 condenser was
opened for inspection on 21st Sept 2017& condenser tubes are found
absolutely free from any scale depositions. (Reference pictures are
attached below)

Corrosion:
To monitor the performance of water treatment chemical specially arranged for the chloride level around
5000 ppm, so we had installed one corrosion loop at C.T outlet for measuring the corrosion rate with MS,
Brass & SS metal strips / coupons fitted inside the loop. After completion period, coupons were checked &
found in excellent condition (result sheet & relevant pictures are attached below)

As on today 22 Feb 2018 total ETP treated Denim Plant effluent available is being used in cooling tower and
plant performance has not deteriorated at all.

We are giving below a comparison of water parameters being used prior to installation of scale ban and
parameters on which plant is running after more than Five month successfully on ETP treated effluent.

CONCLUSION

It is for the first time ever that a power Heat Exchanger is running on ETP treated
effluents and has achieved ZLD without using conventional technologies like RO &
EVAPORATOR.

Having been awarded with the repeat order for second 12 MW Power Plant and 5
MW Power Plant, we can proudly claim to have successfully implemented Scaleban
technology, replacing RO & evaporator enabling M/S.NAHAR INDUSTRY, to fully
utilize their effluent in cooling tower as make up without affecting plant performance.

Effluent Generation and Characteristics in Textile industries.

Efft processing of textiles involves, in addition to extensive amounts of water and dyes, a number
of inorganic and organic chemicals, detergents, soaps and finishing chemicals to aid in the
dyeing process to impart the desired properties to dyed textile products. Residual chemicals
often remain in the effluent from these processes. In addition, natural impurities such as waxes,
proteins and pigment, and other impurities used in processing such as spinning oils, sizing
chemicals and oil stains present in cotton textiles, are removed during desizing, scouring and
bleaching operations. This results in an effluent of poor quality, which is high in BOD and COD
load. Tabl lists typical values of various water quality parameters in untreated effluent from the
processing of fabric using reactive, sulphur and vat dyes and compares these to the DOE effluent
standards for discharge into an inland surface water body (e.g. river, lake, etc.). As
demonstrated, the effluent from textile industries is heavily polluted.
There are generally four levels of treatment, as described below:
· Preliminary: Removal of large solids such as rags, sticks, grit and grease that may result in damage to
equipment or operational problems (Physical);
· Primary: Removal of floating and settable materials, i.e. suspended solids and organic matter (Physical
and Chemical);
· Secondary: Removal of biodegradable organic matter and suspended solids (Biological and Chemical);
· Tertiary: Removal of residual suspended solids / dissolved solids (Physical, Chemical and Biological)
Following photographs for describe in Nahar industry ETP
plant treatment system and MBR introduction.
