Drillstring & Hole

Capacity

ID2 / 1029.4 = bbl/ft

Volume

(ID2 / 1029.4) x section length, ft = bbl

Where ID = Inside diameter of hole or drillstring

Annulus

Annular capacity

(ID2 - OD2) / 1029.4 = bbl/ft

Annular volume

(ID2 - OD2)/1029.4 x section length,ft = bbl

Where ID = Inside diameter of the hole

OD = Outside diameter of the drillstring

Output of Pump in barrels / stroke

Other Pump Output Units

• Barrels/stroke x strokes/minute = barrels/minute

• Barrels/minute x 42 gallons/barrel = gallons/minute

• Barrels/stroke x 42 gallons/barrel = gallons/stroke

• Gallons/stroke x strokes/minute = gallons/minute

• Multiply by measured or estimated efficiency to

determine the pump output to use in calculations.

Drillstring Displacement Volume

Displacement

(OD2 - ID2) / 1029.4 = bbl/ft

Displacement volume

(OD2 - ID2)/1029.4 x section length, ft = bbl

Where ID = Inside diameter of the drillstring section

OD = Outside diameter of the drillstring section
Organizing Hole Volume Calculations
1. Draw a sketch of the circulating wellbore.
2. Label each section with the geometry
3. Begin at the surface and calculate the drillstring volume from
the surface to the bit. (section by section)
4. Calculate the annular volume from the bit to the surface.
(section by section)
5. Add all the section volumes together from the surface to the
bit for the drillstring volume.
6. Add all the section volumes together from the bit to the
surface for the annular volume.
Final Volumes

Drillstring Volume + Annular Volume

3. Circulating Volume
