2
What is adsorption?

Adsorption is the enrichment of a component in the interface

compared to the interior of the phase [1]

3
So, what is absorption?

Absorption is a process in
which the substance is not
retained on the surface,
but penetrates through it
and is distributed
throughout the body of the
solid or liquid [2]

7
Physical and chemical adsorption
(phisisorption and chemisorption)

Adsorption by Exchange

The solute and the adsorbent are attracted by electrostatic

forces.

8
Adsorption isotherms

It relates the amount

of substance
adsorbed by an
adsorbent and the
equilibrium pressure
or concentration at a
constant
temperature.

9
Types of isotherms

10
Types of adsorbent

According to the material

Active carbon

Ion exchange adsorbent resins

Metal oxides

Hydroxides

11
Factors that affect adsorption

• Temperature
• The polarity of the substance. A polar substance (= soluble in
water) can not be eliminated
• Compounds with high molecular weight and low solubility are
more easily absorbed.
• The higher the concentration, the longer the absorption is
delayed.
• Presence of other organic compounds that will compete with
other compounds for the available adsorption sites.
• The pH. For example, acidic compounds are more easily
removed at low pHs

12
How is this process involved with transport
phenomena?

Contact catalysis. It occurs in four stages; adsorption of the

reaction gases on the surface of the catalyst, activation of the
adsorbed reagents, reaction of the activated gas in the adsorbed
phase, diffusion of the products of the reaction from the surface
in the gas phase.

13
Applications

• Keep the vacuum between the walls of Dewar glasses (water

thermos).
• Catalysis of gas reactions by solid surfaces (contact
catalysis).
• Activated carbon masks.
• Removal of coloring materials.
• Chromatographic Analysis.
