:Introduction
 Transportation Engineering:
 the application of technology and scientific
principles to the planning, functional design,
operation and management of facilities for any
mode of transportation in order to provide
the safe, efficient, rapid, comfortable,
convenient, economical, and environmentally
compatible movement of people and goods.
:Introduction
 Traffic Engineering:
 A branch of civil engineering that
uses engineering techniques to achieve the
safe and efficient movement of people and
goods on roadways. ... Traffic
engineering deals with the functional part of
transportation system, except the
infrastructures provided.
Transportation Systems .1
1.1 Transportation System:
consists of the fixed facilities, the flow
entities, and the control system that permit
people and goods to overcome the friction of
geographical space efficiently in order to
participate in a timely manner in some
desired capacity.
Transportation Systems .1
1.1.1 Fixed Facilities:
Fixed facilities are the physical components
of the system that are fixed in space and
constitute the network of links
(e.g., roadway segments,
railway track,
and airports)
Transportation Systems .1
1.1.2 Flow Entities and Technologies:
Flow entities are the units that traverse the
fixed facilities.
They include vehicles,
container units,
railroad cars,
and so on.
Transportation Systems .1
1.1.3 Control System:
The control system consists of vehicular
control and flow control.
It permits the efficient
and smooth operation
of streams of vehicles
and reduction of conflicts
between vehicles.

1.2 Transportation Demand Management TDM:
Traffic demand management
or travel
demand management
(all TDM) is the application of
strategies and policies to
reduce travel demand, or to
redistribute this demand in
space or in time.

TRANSPORTATION MODES
2.1 Introduction:
This chapter begins the transition from a vehicle
facility-specific perspective to a system perspective. It
introduces the coexisting, interacting, and competing
modes of freight and intercity passenger transportation.

This chapter begins with an overview of the basic

characteristics of major transportation modes.

2.3 Intercity Passenger Travel :
The basic purposes generating
intercity transportation are business,
.vacation, and personal reasons

:Travel Modes 2.3.1

Travel modes that are available to
serve intercity travelers include air
travel, cars, trains, and other travel
.modes

2.3 Intercity Passenger Travel :

:Choice of Mode 2.3.2

The choice of mode for long-distance travel is heavily
:depend on
 Time (speed, time of travel, etc …)
 Cost
 Type of Travel (Business, vacation, etc …)
 Service (quality, time, schedule, offers, etc …)
