ISO

• ISO (the International Organization for

Standardization) is the world’s largest producer of
voluntary standards for business, government and
society.
• Founded on February 23,1947.
• headquarters in Geneva,Switzerland
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
• ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are two of the most well-known of the
organization’s 17,000 international standards.

• apply to a variety of economic activities and technologies, including

construction, mechanical engineering and agriculture, medical devices,
information technology, management practice, safety, security,
environment, nanotechnologies, biofuels, renewable energy resources
and energy efficiency.

• While the organization may be referred to by various names in more

than 157 countries, the shortened, internationally recognized version is
ISO, which is derived from the Greek isos (equal).
• ISO certification means that you adhere to the rigorous
industry standards of an international body.
• In some industries, a certification may be a contractual or
regulatory requirement or may be necessary to meet customer
preferences within the context of a risk-management program.
• ISO 9001 relates to quality standards and 14001 to
environmental standards, and both can be applied to any size
or type of organization in any industry.
• The certification says you’ve achieved excellence in processes
and will continually strive to do so.
Six Sigma Black Belt

• Six Sigma Black Belt certifies that an individual has gone

through a quality-related program of study and has demonstrated
the ability to apply that knowledge in the workplace.

• Six Sigma Certification from ASQ demonstrates knowledge that

an individual has in applying Six Sigma principles.

• Six Sigma was originally a system developed by Motorola Inc. to

improve processes by eliminating defects, defined within the Six
Sigma program as nonconformity of a product or service to its
specifications. While Six Sigma is still a registeredservice
mark and trademark ofMotorola, Black Belt’s are certified by
outside bodies.
• Six Sigma utilizes specific methodologies to improve
an existing business process or to create new product or
process designs for predictable, defect-free
performance.

• Six Sigma Black Belts sends a message that a company

is attentive to quality and improvement.

• A Six Sigma team might do an in-depth, four-month,

deep-dive project looking at a discrete set of data in an
automotive plant.
• After that four-month period, the team would have diagnosed
problems or identified areas that could be improved, provided
concrete recommendations on how to enhance those processes,
products or systems and in some cases implemented these
improvements.
• An individual can study Six Sigma principles through a company’s
training program or through an outside educational provider;
similarly, numerous organizations certify that an individual has
achieved the Six Sigma Black Belt.
• ASQ is a professional, non-profit association with more than 80,000
individual and 700 corporate members in more than 60 countries; it
requires that Black Belts prove successful application of their
quality knowledge in actual workplace projects.
Leadership in Energy & Environmental
Design (LEED)
• LEED is a designation applied to building projects and professionals who
are involved in various aspects of construction, including architects, real
estate professionals, facility managers, engineers, interior designers,
landscape architects, construction managers, lenders and government
officials.
• LEED is the accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation
of high-performance green buildings.
• Individuals who pass the LEED Professional Accreditation Exam
receive certification as LEED Accredited Professionals (AP);
buildings are LEED certified.
• These standards give building owners and operators the common
tools they need to adopt and implement green practices in five key
areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site
development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection
and indoor environmental quality.
• It allows us to respond to certain RFPs or to mention in interviews that
we have a concrete commitment to green practices.

• The professionals at SVPA believe that increasingly, LEED certification

does matter to the end consumer, and manufacturers are rapidly
responding with cheaper and more efficient products to accommodate
that demand.

• LEED is still in its infancy, but it has taken the [U.S.] by storm.

• It is defining the standard way of doing things, and as an architect, one

must have it to remain competitive.”
While certifications are generally earned,
quality awards are bestowed upon
organizations. Because of the cachet they
impart, certain awards can result in
considerable international attention,
ultimately enhancing company bottom
lines.
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award

• Established by the U.S. Congress in 1987 and named after a former U.S.
secretary of commerce, the Baldrige Award is given by the U.S. president and
recognizes companies and organizations that have achieved performance
excellence—“the nation’s highest presidential honor for organizational
performance excellence,” according to the U.S. Commerce Department’s
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). (The NIST administers
the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award with the assistance of ASQ.)

• The award is given to qualifying businesses large and small in the

manufacturing and service, education and health care industries and
nonprofit organizations that are deemed to be outstanding in seven
specific areas: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus,
measurement and knowledge management, human resource focus,
process management and results. The award does not honor specific
products or services, but recognizes U.S. organizations for quality and
performance.
• The Baldrige Award gives national awareness and recognition to quality
as a competitiveness factor.

• Past recipients have ranged from well-known multinational corporations

(such as The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co., Federal Express Corp. and Motorola)
to large healthcare organizations (such as the Mercy Health System) to
smaller or lesser-known enterprises and educational institutions (such as
Los Alamos National Bank, the Texas Nameplate Company Inc. and
numerous U.S. school districts).

• While only a few awards are presented each year, the program was
envisioned as a standard of excellence that would encourage and inspire
a broad spectrum of U.S. organizations to achieve world-class quality. To
that end, the board of directors and award recipients give countless
presentations on quality management and performance improvement.
J.D. Power’s Customer Satisfaction Awards

• While the Baldrige Award is administered and presented by the U.S.

government, the J.D. Power and Associates Customer Satisfaction
Awards are based on surveys of actual consumers. The award
symbolizes quality, and it is based on real customer satisfaction
feedback, so it can serve as a powerful marketing tool to consumers
who value the opinions of their peers.

• J.D. Power and Associates, an international marketing information

firm that was established in 1969, creates customer satisfaction and
quality awards based on independent and unbiased research. While
initially known for its work in the automotive industry, the company
now conducts numerous types of studies across a wide variety of
industries, including telecommunications, travel and hotels, marine,
utilities, healthcare, homebuilding, consumer electronics and
financial services.
• The firm surveys millions of consumers and businesses annually
that gauge how well industries are listening and responding to their
customer bases. Additionally, the surveys measure the factors that
determine customer satisfaction and quality. The highest-ranking
company in a specific sector receives the J.D. Power trophy, which it
can reference in advertising and promotional materials. Use of the
name is carefully monitored and regulated through formal
agreements.

• The proliferation of this award suggests the influence it has on

businesses and especially on how customers view businesses.

• To recognize the import of these awards, all we need to do is see

the fanfare and publicity firms attach to receiving them.”
