WHEN CORROSION
COUPON SHOULD BE
USED?
To detect the set-up of corrosion during the
operating life
To measure corrosion rate
To measure the loss of wall thickness (or the
residual wall thickness) of a metallic
component,
To evaluate the efficiency of corrosion control
systems, and particularly fluid treatments
with corrosion inhibitors
To provide a continuous surveillance on the
possible variation of fluid corrosivity during
normal and upset conditions.

Versatile Access
Fitting
 It is applicable to all corrosive environments, and Flange
gives some sort of information for most forms of
corrosion

Retractable Corrosion Holder BUT, because of the time of exposure that

naturally limit the number of data points that can

WHERE CORROSION
COUPON SHOULD BE
PLACED?
 Adequate clearance (horizontal – vertical) shall be guaranteed to allow
comfortable and safe operations of maintenance, periodical coupon
replacement or manual data retrieving.
 if more than one access fitting are installed at one line, the inter-axial
distance between two fittings shall not be lower than 500 mm.
 To minimize the effect of flow rate and flow regime on corrosivity, the
access fittings should be located at a minimum distance of 7 pipe
diameters downstream-of and a minimum of 3 pipe diameters
upstream-of any changes in flow caused by bends, reducers, valves,
etc.
 it is recommended that all access fittings be installed at the bottom of
horizontal sections of piping.
 The 5 or 7 o’clock position is preferred in order to avoid debris build-up
and fouling of fitted threads.
 For small to medium diameter piping that does not have high flow
rates, an alternative is a 12 o’clock position with an extension that
locates the coupon near the bottom of the pipe.
 In the case of the Production flowlines, which are mostly buried and
inaccessible, a convenient location might be found immediately
upstream of each Production Manifold.
 For lines which are to be pigged, corrosion probes must be of the flush-
mounted type.

HOW TO USE CORROSION
COUPON?
STANDARD & TESTING
ASTM G 4 and NACE RP 0775, Procedure for in-plant corrosion coupon testing
 methods for placement, installation and exposure of in-plant corrosion coupons

ASTM G 1
 guidelines for preparation, cleaning, weighing of corrosion coupon

ASTM G 46
 procedures for analysis of localized corrosion

Visual Examination
 Since the coupon averages the amount of weight loss over the period of exposure, it also
assumes that the corrosion of the metal is uniform. This is why it is important to evaluate
coupons visually.
