PRADESH
Uttar Pradesh is India’s fourth largest and
most populous state of India.
The climate of state varies widely with
temperatures reaching as high as 49°C in
summer and as low as -1°C in winters.
It is situated between 23°52’N and 31°28’N
latitudes and 77°3’ and 84°39’E longitudes.
Recorded forest area constitute about 6.88%
of the total geographical area of the state.

back technically to its formation on 1
April 1937 as the North-Western
Provinces of Agra and Awadh, but the
region itself shows the presence of
human habitation dating back to
between 85,000 and 73,000 years

• The culture of Uttar Pradesh is painted in the form of
folk dances, conventional cuisines long imparted
values and traditions
• Other than the folk music, dance, art and craft,
people of Uttar pradesh are known to their rich
cultural heritage and traditional norms.
• It boasts of melange of Vivid culture and architecture.
• Uttar Pradesh attracts large number of
visitors, both national and international;
with more than 71 million domestic tourists
(in 2003) and almost 25% of the All-India
foreign tourists visiting Uttar Pradesh.
DANCE AND MUSIC
• Swami Haridas was a great saint-musician
who championed Hindustani Classical Music.
Tansen, the great musician in Mughal Emperor
Akbar's court, was a disciple of Swami Haridas
.
• Kathak, a classical dance form, involving
gracefully coordinated movements of feet
along with entire body, grew and flourished in
Uttar Pradesh.
• Dance forms of Uttar Pradesh are largely folk
traditions expressed in theatrical form.

LANGUAGES
• The common state-language of Uttar Pradesh is
standard Hindi. While standard Hindi (Khari boli
) is the official language, several important
regional Hindi 'dialects' are spoken in the state.
• Various types of languages spoken in Uttar
Pradesh are Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Braj, Bagheli and
Bundeli, besides several local dialects that do
not have a formal name.
•  Urdu is prominent in Uttar Pradesh as Lucknow
was once the centre of Indo-Persianate culture

ART AND CRAFT
• The major art forms popular and practiced in Uttar
Pradesh since immemorial time are painting,
sculpturing, hand-crafting of designs on metal,
wood, ivory, stone and clay.
• The tradition of painting in Uttar Pradesh has been
going on since pre-historic times. The cave paintings
of Sonbhadra and Chitrakoot depict scenes of
hunting, war, festivals, dances, romantic life
and animals.
• One of the important crafts of Uttar Pradesh
• is Chikankari, which entails delicate and
traditional hand embroidery. This form of
handicrafts is mainly practiced in Lucknow.
• Lucknow is well known for its jewellery and

• With its 40 grand festivals and about 2,250 fairs, Uttar Pradesh
is considered among the most colourful state of the country.
All the occasions are celebrated with enthusiasm and
excitement.
• These fairs are organised every twelve and six years
in Haridwar. In India, the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh are also
celebrated in Prayag, Nasik and Ujjain.
• Festivals like Raksha Bandhan,Dussehra,Janmashtami, Diwali,
Holi, Eid,etc. are celebrated in Uttar Pradesh.Apart from these
major festivals Uttar Pradesh is visited
for several unique fairs and celebrations.
• Yoga Festival at Varanasi & Allahabad.
This is a recent addition to the state culture.
It is organized to promote the unparalleled
art of meditation and Yoga that has heavily
influenced the India and world.
