BEARINGS

WHAT ARE BEARINGS?

BEARINGS are highly engineered,

precision-made components that enable the
machinery to move at extremely HIGH SPEEDS
and CARRY REMARKABLE LOADS with ease
and efficiency.
A BEARING is a device that is used to enable
ROTATIONAL or LINEAR MOVEMENT.
BASIC PARTS OF A BEARING
1. INNER RING / INNER RACE:
Is the SMALLER of the two
bearing rings.
Has a groove on its outer diameter
to form a pathway for the balls.
The surface of outside diameter
path is finished to extremely tight
tolerances and is honed to a
very smooth.
Is mounted on the shaft and it is
the rotating element.
2. OUTER RING / OUTER RACE:
Is the LARGER of the two
bearing rings.
Has a groove on its inside
diameter to form a pathway for
the balls.
Also has the same high
precision finish of the inner
ring.
The outer ring is usually held
stationery.
3. ROLLING ELEMENT
Separate the inner ring and outer ring and permit the
bearing to rotate with minimal friction.
The most common material used to produce the load
carrying components in precision ball bearings, roller
bearings, and tapered roller bearings is 52100
chrome steel.
4. CAGE (RETAINER):
The purpose of the cage in ball bearing is to separate
the balls.
It maintains constant spacing between the inner and
outer rings, to accurately guide the balls in the path
during rotation and to prevent the balls of bearing
from falling out.
OTHER ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS
*SHIELDS:
Is a stamped, profiled sheet metal disc.
Shield is pressed into a very small groove on the
inside edge diameter of the outer ring.
A small space or gap remains open between the
outside diameter of the inner ring and shield.
Purpose of shields is to keep larger particles of
contamination from entering the bearing.
*SEALS:
Is also inserted into the very small groove on the
inside, edge diameter of the outer ring.
The inner edge of the seal is molded into a
specifically designed lip configuration.
TYPES OF BEARING ELEMENTS
1. SLIDING ELEMENT BEARINGS
- A type of bearing where essentially sliding friction
exists.
Applications:
• Engine Crankshaft
Bearings
• Centrifugal Pumps
• Turbines
• Large Size Electric Motors
• Concrete Mixers
• Rope Conveyors etc.
PLAIN OR SLIDER BEARINGS
-simplest type of bearing and are composed of just
the bearing surface with no rolling elements.
-the rotating shaft has a sliding contact with the
bearing which is held stationary.
-Due to large contact area, friction between mating
parts is high.
-To reduce friction and wear, sliding surfaces are
separated by a lubricating oil film.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
SLIDING ELEMENT BEARINGS

ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES:
• Cheap • Requires large
• Noiseless operation supply of
• Easily machined lubricating oil
• Have vibration damping • Suitable only for
properties low speed and
• Can take shock load temperature
• Less resistant to
wear
2. ROLLING ELEMENT BEARINGS
- place balls or rollers between two rings or “races”
that allows motion with little rolling resistance and
sliding.
Applications:
• Automobile Axles
• Gear Boxes
• Machine Tool Spindles
• Small Size Electric Motors
• Pumps
• Crane Hooks etc.
BALL BEARINGS
-uses spherical balls as rolling element.
-It is the most common type of rolling element
bearing.
-can handle both radial and thrust loads but are
usually used where the load is relatively small.
-Because of its structure, there is not a lot of contact
with the balls on the inner and outer races.
-If the bearing is overloaded the balls would deform
and ruin the bearing.
TYPES OF BALL BEARING
1. SINGLE ROW DEEP GROOVE BALL BEARING
-Is the most common type of rolling contact bearing.
-Can withstand both axial and radial loads.
-Under radial loads, contact between balls and races is
along a vertical line.
-Rings get displaced slightly under the axial load and the
balls roll in contact with side walls of the races.
-Are used for supporting shafts in the gearbox.
2. DOUBLE ROW DEEP GROOVE BALL BEARING
-It is a compounded unit of two single row deep groove
ball bearing.
-Are very suitable for bearing arrangements where the
load carrying capacity of a single row bearing is
inadequate.
-For the same bore and outside diameter, double row
bearings are slightly wider than single row bearings.
