ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES:
• Cheap • Requires large
• Noiseless operation supply of
• Easily machined lubricating oil
• Have vibration damping • Suitable only for
properties low speed and
• Can take shock load temperature
• Less resistant to
wear
2. ROLLING ELEMENT BEARINGS
- place balls or rollers between two rings or “races”
that allows motion with little rolling resistance and
sliding.
Applications:
• Automobile Axles
• Gear Boxes
• Machine Tool Spindles
• Small Size Electric Motors
• Pumps
• Crane Hooks etc.
BALL BEARINGS
-uses spherical balls as rolling element.
-It is the most common type of rolling element
bearing.
-can handle both radial and thrust loads but are
usually used where the load is relatively small.
-Because of its structure, there is not a lot of contact
with the balls on the inner and outer races.
-If the bearing is overloaded the balls would deform
and ruin the bearing.
TYPES OF BALL BEARING
1. SINGLE ROW DEEP GROOVE BALL BEARING
-Is the most common type of rolling contact bearing.
-Can withstand both axial and radial loads.
-Under radial loads, contact between balls and races is
along a vertical line.
-Rings get displaced slightly under the axial load and the
balls roll in contact with side walls of the races.
-Are used for supporting shafts in the gearbox.
2. DOUBLE ROW DEEP GROOVE BALL BEARING
-It is a compounded unit of two single row deep groove
ball bearing.
-Are very suitable for bearing arrangements where the
load carrying capacity of a single row bearing is
inadequate.
-For the same bore and outside diameter, double row
bearings are slightly wider than single row bearings.
