KIND OF SENTENCE
1. Active and passive sentence
A. Active sentences B. Passive sentences
Function : Subject performs action Fuction : Object is done
Rules : - sentence must have object something by subject
- subject must perform one Rule : object are perfomed
or more actions
by subject ,not performing
- place subject first
Keyword : V + ed
Keyword : V + ing
Example : Sam mopping that floor Example : That floor are
mopped by Calvin
2. Conditional
Fuction : expressing a condition
Rule : condition happened when something occurs
Keyword : happy, sad, hungry, smooth, etc
Example : Peter feel happy because he has new sister
3. Degrees of comparison
Fuction : when we compare a person or thing with another
Rule : to compare someone with out special ending use positive
Keyword : V + er / V + est
-to compare someone with someone that have higher degree,use somparative
(V + er)
-to compare someone with someone that have the highest degree use superlative
(V + est)
Example : - Positive : Felix is smart
- Comparative: Felix is smarter than Christopher
- Superlative : Felix is smartest in his class
4. Clouses
Function : Groups of words have subject and predicate to describe
an action of subject/object/for complementer
Rule : Must have both subject and predicate
Example : The dog barked at him
5. Adjective clouses
Fuction : describe noun
Rules : - contain a subject and verb
-begin with relative pronoun/relative adverb
Keyword : who, whorm, whose, which, etc
Example : whose phone is that?
6. Question tag
Fuction : express the quest
Rules : -engage listener in the chat
-end with ”?” mark
-verify that someone understood
Keyword : who, what, when, sure, etc
Example : Are you sure that you let the “UNI” be the president for
this time?
7. Elliptical sentence
Fuction : Avold unnecessary repeated word
Rule : when have 2 or more same on mean of word ,we will use
elliptical
Example : when he was studying he tried hard (when we use elliptic
: ”when studying, he tried hard.”)
8. Causative verb
Function : indicate person/thing make something happen
Rule : the subject didn’t perform action in real time.
someone/something do that for the “subject”
Keyword : have, had, has, etc
Example : I have my coat cleaned
9. Subjunctive
Fuction : someone wished for something
Rule : someone want/participate something happen
Keyword : like ,must, join, own, hope, wish, etc
Example : I hope next concert will be in Depok
10. intensifier
Function : for make more strength or more weak a word
Rule : must have another word to compare
Keyword : very, a bit ,terribly , so ,more , etc
Example : I’m terribly sorry for what happen yesterday
