LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Explain how early Filipinos applied scientific principles in their daily living;
• Present government policies on science and technology and explain their
importance to the nation; and

• Discuss the role of science and technology in nation-building


INTRODUCTION

• Many significant inventions and discoveries have been accomplished


by or attributed to Filipinos.

• How does the development of science and technology affect the


development of the Philippines as a nation.
PRE-COLONIAL

PERIOD
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD

• Advancements began in the pre-colonial period in the Philippines.


• Before the coming of Spaniards, early Filipino settlers were already
using certain plants and herbs as medicines.

• System of farming and animal-rising were also implemented.


PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD

• Early Filipinos had also developed different modes of transportation,


whether terrestrial or maritime.

•A complicated engineering feat was achieved by the natives of


Cordilleras when they built the rice terraces by hand.
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD

• Through the rice terraces, people were able to cultivate crops on the
mountainsides in cold temperatures.

• Incorporated irrigation system that uses water from the forest and
mountain tops to achieve an elaborate farming system.
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD

• The rice terraces of the Cordilleras, show the innovative and


indigenous way of the natives to survive in an otherwise unfriendly
environment.

• Colonization by the Spaniards provided the Philippines with modern


means of construction

• Walls, roads, bridges, and other large infrastructures were built taught
by the Spaniards.

• The Spanish government developed health and education system that
were enjoyed by the principalia class.

• The American occupation modernized almost all aspects of life.


• Established a government agency, Bureau of Science
• For nurturing development in the field of science and technology

• After achieving independence, each leadership had its own science


and technology agenda.

• Some of the presidents posted more developments.


POST-COLONIAL PERIOD
• Under the former president and late dictator, Ferdinand Marcos
ushered in advancements in science and technology.

• Many agencies were established and strengthened:


• Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA)
POST-COLONIAL PERIOD

• National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)


• Reconstituted National Science and Technology Authority
• Marcos saw that the key to nation-building is the continued
development of science and technology.
ACTIVITY
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Form into six (6) groups. Each group will be assigned to a president after Marcos.
2. Identify some achievements in the field of science and technology under the
assigned administration and trace how they helped shape the Philippines as a
nation.

3. Present your findings through a 5 – 10 minute class presentation.
