What is Virtual Reality(VR)???
 VR is simply presenting the brain with a computer generated virtual information
which it can explore in some manner
 How to achieve this Virtual Environment??
 Head Mounted Display Input Devices

 Omni Directional Treadmills

 This gives complete VR Experience using combination of both

VR in Automotive Industry
 Virtual Car Showrooms
 First Introduced by Audi , now used by BMW and even Mahindra
 Lets Shoppers Turn any space into a virtual showroom
 They also provide pre recorded car testing facilities without actually being stuck in
traffic
 Reduces cost
 Negligible amount to be spend by dealers now for the showroom
 According to Bloomberg, U.S. dealers spend $2.75 billion annually on interest to keep new
vehicles on their lots
 Very less cost of renting the showroom
 Can Help High End car manufacturers like Pagani who makes just 40-50 cars a year
to increase brand awareness
 Studies shows that 5% of the cars will be purchased online by 2020
 Can easily solve the problem of anticipating how future care is expected to perform
 Using VR, car designers can significantly cut both project cost and time by visualizing the exterior of a
vehicle virtually instead of creating a new physical mock-up in 1:1 ratio each time they make some
changes to a prototype
 Would let Customers can easily participate in customization of their cars as they like it to be
 BMW announced earlier this month that it’s using HTC Vive headsets and VR to help develop new models.
  Toyota utilized Zero Light VR to virtually launch their new C-HR car. Even if the physical version does not
exist yet, everybody can still experience what it will be like to have one.

 Can be used as a learning aid in driving both humans and machines(Self Driving Cars)
 Currently Testing of Self Driving cars requires them to put through multiple circumstances which are both
expensive to create and can cause material as well as human loss
 Simulations aided with VR can solve this with multiple circumstances, created with just software codes
 This can even help companies to make safer cars by getting a perspective of
how accident happened
 VR can also be used in training of personnel's for the operation of heavy
equipment’s
 Although simulators exists but they are way too costly compared to VR
Current Usage by Manufacturers
 Ford
 Through a virtual laboratory, allowed its designers and engineers to stay in
different countries and collaborate on car design in real-time
 Increased employee efficiency by 90%
 Volkswagen
 Instead of creating a VR Lab like ford they used just simple HTC Vive headsets to
serve the exact same purpose
 Also uses VR to train employee to assemble models
 Toyota
 Developed the virtual reality driving simulator called TeenDrive365
 Aimed at using with Oculus Rift, the simulator allows students to experience
driving a car in virtual reality before they get on the road, thus avoiding a failed
product

 To sum up VR is the future of car design

Challenges

 Basic things are easier to implement but high quality stuff would require
much more capital which may be out of the reach of smaller companies
 VR stimulus is not ideal for rating size/roominess and interior feel while
testing a car using VR
Inferences
 Currently the market for VR technologies is just about $1 Billion but is
expected to grow to about $120 Billions
 Car infotainment system is projected to exceed to about $35 Billion, out of
which VR tech is also expected to get a large chunk
