What is a Paragraph
A paragraph is a group of sentences that
expresses a single idea. In order for a
paragraph to be effective, it must begin
with a topic sentence, have sentences that
support the main idea of that paragraph,
and maintain a consistent flow.
An effective Paragraph
 presents a single idea
 begins with a topic sentence that makes
this single idea evident
 contains support in form of sentences
that convey this single idea
 is strategically organized to maintain
flow
 maintains your essay’s objective
 informs and entertains your reader
about your paper’s overall idea.
Essential Elements
 Unity-In order for a paragraph to maintain a
sense of unity, the paragraph must focus solely
on a single idea, point, or argument that is being
discussed. Therefore, the paragraph should not
begin to stray and develop new ideas.

 Coherence- Coherence is more commonly

referred to as the flow of your writing. When a
paragraph flows, the reader will be able to
understand the main idea that you have
presented. After presenting your main idea in
your topic sentence, each sentence following
must build upon each other in an organized
manner

 Have a plan. Decide on the topic or follow
the given prompt.
 Gather all necessary research and
information beforehand.
 Start with a topic sentence that
introduces the information.
 Fill in with the supporting details.
 Finish with a strong, concluding
sentence.
 Review your paragraph for spelling,
grammar, coherency, and style
Example
Sunday is my favourite day of the week. I like it
because on Sunday, I watch football. On other
days, I also get to watch football but not all day.
There are other sports on other days to watch on
TV. Sunday lunch is a favourite of mine because I
eat with my father in front of the TV. All the other
days, I have to eat at the table which is less fun.
Some days my dad doesn’t make it home from
work until after I’m in bed. Some weeks my dad
travels, and I don’t see him for several days. The
highlight of the day is when we watch the Dolphins
play. Dad and I get so excited, we yell and cheer
together. The thing that I like to do best in the
world is watch TV with my dad.
Reworked and more coherent
 Sunday is my favourite day because I
spend the day watching football with my
dad. On Sunday, unlike the other days of
the week when he works, my dad spends
the whole day with me watching football on
TV. We even eat lunch together while
watching. The highlight of the day is
watching the Dolphins game. Dad and I get
so excited, we yell and cheer together. On
Sundays, I get to combine watching my
favourite sport and spending time with my
favourite person—what a great day!
