Evaluation:
The interpretation of seedlings and ungerminated seeds in a germination
test is done as per following rules:

Normal Seedlings:
They show the potential for continued development into satisfactory plants
when grown in good quality soil and under favourable conditions of
moisture , temperature and light.
These include,
1. Intact seedlings
2. Seedlings with slight defects
3. Seedlings with secondary infections
Abnormal seedlings:
The seedlings do not show the potential to develop into a normal plant when
grown in good quality soil and under favourable conditions of moisture,
temperature and light.
These include,
1. Damaged seedlings
2. Deformed/unbalanced seedlings
3. Decayed seedlings

Multigerm seed units:

Seed units which are capable of producing more than one seedling.
Ungerminated seeds:
Seeds which have not germinated by the end of the test period.
They are classified as ,
1. Hard seeds
2. Fresh seeds
3. Dead seeds
Every seedling is evaluated in accordance with prescribed rules.
 It may be necessary to remove the seed coat and separate the
cotyledons,in order to examine the plumule in species where the essential
structures are still enclosed at the end of the test.
 At the end of the normal germination test, the percentage of ungerminated
seeds that are viable may be determined by a biochemical test.
 Multiple seed structures included in the pure seed fraction under rules
should be tested as single seeds.
 The result of the test indicates the percentage of structures which have
produced at least one normal seedling.
Calculation of result:
Results are expressed as percentage by number.
Germination rate is the average number of Seeds that germinate over 5
day / 10 days time period.
Germination(%)= G/N*100
Where,
G= number of normal germinated seedlings
N=Number of seed down
For example, If you planted 50 radish seeds and 35 seeds are
germinated,you would write 35/50*100=70%
Reporting of results:
The percentage germination reported in an Analysis Certificate indicates the
proportion,by number of Seeds, which have produced seedlings classified as
normal under conditions and within specified period.
The percentage of abnormal seedlings hard ,fresh and dead seeds is
reported in the same way in an Analysis Certificate at appropriate place. If
the results is nil for any of these categories it shall be reported as “O”
instead of leaving the appropriate column blank.
