Colon and Semicolon

COLON

Colon punctuation is used to introduce a word or words,
a phrase, a list, or a quotation.
The use of Colon

To give emphasis
To make the reader stay
focuses
To make the reader pays
attention to what comes
next
I like many healthy foods:
carrots, broccoli, apples,
spinach, and oranges.
Mary has only one thing on her
mind: work.
My mom always told me to follow
the Golden Rule: “Treat others as
you want to be treated.”
I have lived in a few states:
Alabama, Kansas, Colorado, and
Richard was the best person for
the job because he had
experience in one key area:
teaching
Colon can also be used after salutation
(greeting) of a formal or business letter

Common misuses of the
colon
Preposition cannot be followed Verb cannot be followed by a colon

He was responsible for: cooking dinner, I like to eat: pizza, chicken, and
washing dishes, and taking out the trash pie.
My favourite foods are: pizza, chicken,
and pie

He had a few responsibilities: cooking I have a few favourite foods: pizza,


dinner, washing dishes, and taking out chicken, and pie
the trash.
SEMICOLON

Like commas, semicolons indicate an audible pause—slightly
longer than a comma's, but short of a period's full stop.
Eliminating the pause between
two statements without using INDEPENDENT CLAUSE ONLY
conjunctions (and, but, nor, yet,
for, so)
The use of
Semicolon
To replace conjunctions
To connect sentences that contain internal
punctuation.
When I finish here, and I will soon, I'll be glad to help you;

To be used as a super-comma
