FUNCTIONS OF

COMMUNICATION
We are in the age of communication
and technology. This age brings
forth a global village where myriad
societies of every degree of
sophistication are linked by
communication. But even though
the age of communication came
upon us, its primary impact has
been upon the way people talk with
one another.
COMMUNICATION
PERFORMS FIVE
IMPORTANT
FUNCTIONS FROM A
SOCIETY
1. To Motivate into Action
 There are times when you speak to convince an
audience or to stimulate them. However , most
often you will probably want your audience to
take some action as a result of your speech.

 More specifically, the purpose of the speech to

get action is to present ideas, suggestions, and
arguments in such a manner that your audience
will believe so strongly what you tell them and
they will actually carry out your suggestions.

 Remember, the speech is successful only if your

audience actually do what you want.
FIVE WAYS TO
MOTIVATE
YOURSELF INTO
ACTION
1.Throw your hat over the wall

Do you remember being on the

playground in elementary school when
some idiot threw the ball over the
fence?
Then everyone got together and
decided who had to hop the fence and
get it? Let’s use this example in today’s
life. Throwing your hat over the wall
means completing an action that forces
you to get started on a goal.
2.Make the consequences
unbearable

Did you know most people would

rather protect their assets than risk
gaining more? This is human nature
but sometimes it goes against our
best interest.
This technique is similar to the first
but stands out on this principle: if
you don’t accomplish your goal,
there will be consequences.
3. Envision

Envision the feeling of actually

accomplishing your goal and
then chase that feeling like the
wolf.
4. Set aside something until
you accomplish the mission

This one is pretty self-explanatory.

Sometimes to just go without
something is a great motivator.
This is a great way to build
willpower as well as motivate.
2. To Give Information and Secure
Understanding
Notice that a speech is considered
informative whenever the speaker’s
primary purpose is to impart new
knowledge.
Along with it, the speaker may also wish
to persuade listeners by influencing their
beliefs, attitudes, or behavior.
It also arouses interest. This means that
your audience must understand and
comprehend fully what you are talking
5. Start the snowball

What does every large snowball have in

common? They were all started by a
single snowflake. This is a momentum
builder. What small task can you do
right now that you can keep building on
until you’ve  conquered your goal?
This may be hard because if you lack
the motivation to do anything in the
first place. So use one of the other
tactics first then implement this one to
get going.
3.To Persuade or To Convince
Through the use of logic, evidence, and
emotion you work to secure the willing
acceptance of your proposal by your
audience. If you are to get the audience to
agree to your concept willingly, you must
present sufficient logic and evidence to
persuade them that you are right.
An important concept of convincing an
audience is to get them to accept your
proposal willingly.
