Sample topics:

Recycled concrete aggregates for concrete production

Demolished construction waste  concrete can be recycled

Recycling municipal solid waste incineration ash as raw

materials for the production of cement
1 landfill remaining in Singapore (Pulau Semakau), lifetime 30-40yrs, can
either prolong lifespan, build another, or reduce waste – incineration reduces
80-90% of solid waste, incineration ash landfill – recycle or reuse (cement)!

Development of underground space

Singapore‘s size: 500  710 km2 due to land reclamation, deeper water as we
go out, how to create additional space to sustain living: high rise buildings &
underground space – too broad, look into fire safety within etc.
Innovative strategies to encourage car sharing, taxi
sharing, and car pooling 3

Greener approach in transportation– but people need incentives... How can we
provide incentives to make this happen?

Hints
1. Ability to identify the key issues and to define a
good topic with proper scope
This is a critical step and almost determines the success of your
project
You should spend quality time to brainstorm with you teammates
to come up with a “good” topic with manageable scope
Remember this is a term project and you only have two months
Avoid defining a general topic with broad scope, such as Design
of Green Building. This type of project is generally superficial and
lack of depth
The proposed solution is often a combination of existing
technologies and is not considered novel & original

Hints
2. Understanding of the background information

You should equip yourself with deep knowledge in

the selected field by conducting extensive literature
review from books, journal papers, and internet…

This step is the key for you to:

Define a good topic in the field
Define a proper scope which is manageable
Create innovative solution
Provide justification to the proposed solution

Hints
3. Novelty of the proposed solution

The proposed solution should be novel and original

This does NOT mean it has to be a completely new
idea
The solution is considered novel and original if:
It overcomes the limitation of existing solutions (i.e.
introduces a significant improvement)
It is a combination of existing solutions and creates new
features and abilities that could not be achieved before (in
other words 1 + 1 > 2)

Hints
4. Effectiveness & feasibility of the proposed
solution

Provide justification to the proposed solution to

demonstrate the idea is effective and feasible now
or in 5-10 years with some additional R&D effort

Justification can be calculation, estimation,

simulation, cost-benefit analysis, prototype, etc.
