Lecture No: 1 General & Specific Exercises AIMS
• Following assessment of patients,-- exercises are
determined for individuals or groups • The therapist then plans a set of exercises designed for the individual aims • Exercises can be progressed or altered depending on effect on patient or group • Exercises can be either general or group according to the nature of the patients condition and the aims of treatment General exercises
• Basic plan for a set of exercises
• Respiratory exercises • Extremity exercises • Head and neck exercises • Trunk exercises • Extremity exercises: balance exercises • Respiratory exercises: cool down effect Changing scheme
• Change exercises as the need arises
• If patient achieves the aim of a particular exercises it can be progressed or exchanged for a more difficult one • Or may have to change for a simpler one or it may not be suitable choice for the particular patient • Too frequent changes often reduce the benefit to be gained • Changes which are too infrequent result in the exercises becoming unsuitable for the present Click icon to add picture
condition of the patient so impede progress and
lead to boredom SPECIFIC EXERCISES
• Used in treatment of local conditions eg, colles fracture
• When the local condition is such that it impedes the normal activities of the body as a whole, both general and specific exercise may be included in treatment • Arrangements of exercises within a specific scheme can only be planned in broad outline those which are strengthening or mobility can be started at start • Coordination and functional use towards the end • All efforts must be made to avoid using the same muscles strongly in consecutive exercises to avoid undue fatigue

• The aims may require the inclusion of other techniques or
skills such as electrotherapy, massage, or passive manual mobilisation the exercise must be related to the whole plan of treatment
• Patients must be receiving treatment from other therapist
like OT or speech therapist, in this case the physiotherapist should consider the total management of the patient
