SUSTAINABLE

ARCHITECTURE
Need of Sustainable Architecture
 For the long period, architecture created too much artificial
environment and this is the reason we forget the need of
human beings to live in harmony with nature.
This is led us to following condition:
1. More people live in urban areas than in rural areas.
2. More than 50% domestic waste and 50% pollutants come from
construction activities.
3. 40% of global raw materials and energy is consumed by
buildings.
4. Running out of fossil energy sources.
(Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, Petroleum, Liquefied petroleum)
Need to utilize renewable energy sources!

“Our generation must be committed to the task

of bringing urban areas into balance with the
natural environment.”*
*United Nations Environment publication, World Environment Day 2005
Sustainable Meaning
 Able to be maintained at a certain level.
 Able to continue without causing damage.
 Conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of
Natural resources.
 Ecology: Study of the relationships of organisms with
their living and non-living environment.
The Goals

 Minimizing CO2 emission: Zero carbon homes

The Nanjing Green Light House, for example, is a zero carbon building
located in China.
 Energy Saving
 Human Comfort
 Improve Building Performance
 Protecting Environment by avoiding depletion of natural
resources.
 Improving health conditions in buildings.
Sustainable Architecture
 Functional: constructional, operational
 Ecological: building materials, energy use, energy sources,
water management, waste and pollution management
 Human: safety and security, health, comfort
 Socio-Cultural: aesthetics, social context
 Economical: profit, life cycle cost

Considering all relevant aspects of sustainability requires a

joint effort of several disciplines (architects, engineers, cost
analysts, contractors, investors and end users) to perform a
Life Cycle Design
7 MAJOR THEMES IN SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
1. REDUCE – REUSE - RECYCLE
2. LESS WASTE
3. MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES
4. MINIMISING ENERGY IN CONSTRUCTION AND USE
5. PRESERVING NATURAL FEATURES AND BIO -
DIVERSITY
6. PROTECTING AGAINST POLLUTION
7. HUMAN HEALTH AND COMFORT

Recommended Sustainable Construction
Materials

Timber
Timber has the lowest environmental impact during its production, use
and lifecycle. It is also easily recyclable material. It is recommended for
ground floors, Intermediate floors, party floors and partition walls.
Hardboard and softwood are recommended for doors and stairs.

Recycled Materials
Recycled are materials taken from demolition and re-used. These
materials replace the need for new materials, therefore saves up to 95%
of embodied energy impact and cost.
VCP for External Drainage
Vitrified clay pipes (VCP) are recommended due to durability and
having low embodied energy. PVC pipes are prohibited.
Recycled Bricks
Recycled bricks are recommended because they have ultra-low
embodied energy and high durability.
Recycled Aggregates
These are usually cheaper than new materials.
Structural system
Timber frames are recommended for structural system due to
light weight and low embodied energy.
Mineral wool
Mineral wool or stone wool are recommended for cavity wall
insulation.
