ROAD REHABILITATION AND

MAINTENANCE
ROAD MAINTENANCE

• Is the preservation of infrastructure facilities to prolong the life span of the

structure. It is the required work to keep the structure in the original condition.
PURPOSE OF ROAD MAINTENANCE

• To retain highway safety and standards

• To preserve structural integrity & design life
• Minimize vehicle operating cost
TYPES OF MAINTENANCE

• Routine Maintenance
• Preventive Maintenance
• Long Term Performance Based Maintenance Contract
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

• Refers to maintenance activity regularly performed throughout the year and

includes carriageway maintenance and roadside maintenance. It is the day-to-
day work that is necessary to preserve and keep a pavement close to an as
constructed condition as possible.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

• It is the work which is done to prevent deterioration of a pavement to restore

a pavement to its as-constructed condition, thus reducing the need for more
substantial work.
LONG TERM PERFORMANCE BASED MAINTENANCE
CONTRACT
• It is a new concept designed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of
road maintenance operations. It is a multiyear contract which consists of three
components, namely;
1. Road and Bridge Performance Based Maintenance
2. Preventive Maintenance
3. Maintenance Backlog Reduction
ROAD AND BRIDGE PERFORMANCE BASED
MAINTENANCE
• Regular Routine Maintenance Activities:
I. Pothole patching, scaling of cracks on pavement

II. Grading and patching of shoulders

III. Drainage Cleaning and clearing

IV. Roadside and feature maintenance; vegetation control, road sign and guardrail cleaning and repainting and maintenance of other
roadside feature

V. Road markings maintenance

VI. Bridge Maintenance, cleaning of bridge decks, shelves framework and drainage, spot repainting and clearing of waterway flows.
ROAD AND BRIDGE PERFORMANCE BASED
MAINTENANCE
• For Periodic Maintenance Activities
1. Re-gravelling of shoulders
2. Large area resealing of pavement
3. Bridge parapet repairs, deck sealing, scour protection, repainting
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

• This refers to works more extensive than routine maintenance and helps
prevent undue roadway deterioration.
I. Asphalt Overlay

II. Concrete Reblocking

MAINTENANCE BACKLOG REDUCTION

• Restoration (re-gravelling) of the shoulders

• Reconditioning of drainage facilities and construction of new drainage
facilities
• Slope protection works
MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS

• On Gravel Roads • On Asphalt Roads • On Concrete Roads

1. Grading 1. Resealing 1. Resealing
2. Scarifying and Reshaping 2. Resurfacing 2. Re-blocking
3. Patching Potholes 3. Selective Repair 3. Selective Replacement
4. Re-gravelling
