V Mission Green was developed by five

UMass Dartmouth students: Nicole

Decot, Lauren Beckner, Anna Brennan,
Rebecca Wicks, and Daphne Rosier

V Our aim is to spread knowledge of the

positive effects of recycling to our
younger generation.
V Daphne- Wiki designer
V Lauren- Wiki creator/organizer
V Nicole- Meeting coordinator and contact
director
V Anna- Weekly Agenda Maker
V Rebecca- Meeting Minutes/Note taker
1. Everyone shows up on time at meetings- if not need to notify
everyone else otherwise.
2. Everyone comes prepared with ideas/research and
completed tasks.
3. One excused absence is accepted for DeMello lessons.

4. All team members have to communicate together by e-mail/

phone outside of class and meetings.

5. All team members should go over each others work and give
constructive criticism.
6. All members must meet Monday at 5:00 on the fourth floor of
the library. There will be a weekly mandatory meeting.
V We presented our mission and who we
were
V Asked students what they know about
recycling
V Taught them basic facts
V Have students recycle 15 items for the next
class
V The carbon foot print activity
V Our aim- to educate them about what a carbon
foot print is, and how they can reduce it.
V Fun, hands on activity
V Used paint to make their footprints on recycled
paper
V Signed with their name on the bottom along with
something they have learned about recycling.
V The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
packet
V Our aim- to educate the kids about
the 3 R¶s of recycling
V We read the packet out loud,
students took turns reading
V Had them answer questions on the
packet and share their answers
with the class
V The worm bin activity
V Marissa brought the worms and bins
V We brought the newspaper and spray bottle
V Constructed a worm bin with the students help
V Explained the importance of composting using the 3 R¶s
V They wrote short essays about what they learned from
this lesson which they will eventually show their ³little
buddies´ how they made them
V We shared answers aloud
V The area that we need the most
improvement in is "è

  ".
V The second area we need to improve in
is "i i
 ".

V Our Community partner was the Demello Elementary

School in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
V We worked in a fourth grade classroom with 25
students and their teacher, Helen Mello.
V As a team, we communicated with the teacher quite
frequently, and met with the children on four separate
occasions.
V We educated the children about recycling and gave
them valuable knowledge that they will have with
them for the rest of their lives and can pass on to
others (friends, parents, siblings, etc).
V Challenge
Challenge--Marissa didn¶t show up
(had our materials)
V For our major ARD event, we planned
to do a worm bin activity.
V Since Marissa was absent-
absent- Reduce,
Reuse,Recycle packet
V Rescheduled worm bin activity
V Our community involvement consisted of
working with 25 children over the course
of the semester.

V Not only are we just educating the

children in recycling, but we are
educating them in hopes of their
knowledge spreading across the
community.
V We spent all four teaching sessions educating the
children on recycling.
V Interesting facts about recycling
V Reading activity ³Reduce, Reuse, Recycle´
V The carbon footprint activity- designed for each
student to recycle 15-20 items outside of the
classroom
V Since each student recycled at least 15 items, 25
students x15 items= 375 recycled items
V The worm bin is to teach the children about the
importance of composting and reducing their
garbage
V Lesson with ³little buddies´ next semester
V By the final lesson, we could see a complete
change in their knowledge on recycling.
V By teaching them at such a young age, we hope
that the future generation will get a better grasp
on recycling and its importance.
V They will share their knowledge with their ³little
buddies´ next semester.
V Many children were eager to tell us about how
they got their younger sibling to recycle, or their
mother, father, or friend.
V We left a packet from The Green Team where
Mrs. Mello can continue to teach similar recycling
lessons. (posters, fun activities, lesson plans)
V Mrs. Mello told us that she has never seen the
children so excited about learning.
V Her comment made us pleased to know we
made an impact by providing the children with
knowledge that will stay with them forever.
V The worm bin is a continuous recycling activity
that they can share with others.
V We chose different creative activities to do with
the children that no one has ever done in the
past.
V We created a carbon footprint activity, relating
recycling to creativity in a hands on (feet on!)
activity.
V Another creative idea we had was to have the
children make their own worm bin that they will
have in the classroom even after we are done
teaching them. When Marissa didn't show up
for one of our planned activities, we were
creative and managed to work out an activity
for the children that day.
V Working with Children- When we realized we were working
with children we were immediately excited and started thinking
of lessons that they would enjoy. We were hesitant about
making comprehensive material for fourth graders, but they
actually knew and retained more information than we had
expected, which was great!
Dividing up Tasks- At our first meeting we wrote down our
attributes that could benefit the team. Lauren and Daphne were
good at creativity aspects such as updating the Wiki and
making sure it is presentable. Anna and Rebecca liked to take
notes and write so they were in charge of making meeting
minutes/agendas. Nicole was good at contacting/scheduling so
she called the stakeholders and made meetings. So far we
have been able to keep up with our roles and do the assigned
work.
V The Timing- Our schedules were somewhat
conflicting between Mission Green, Mrs.Mello, and
Marissa. We wish that the lessons had started earlier
and closer together in the week so we could have
had more time to work on the project later.

V The Individual Workload/Effort- Even though each

member had their assigned tasks some were late to
post them or to even do them. At meetings after a
long day of work/school we would often be tired and
not put 100% effort into the Wiki, leaving others to do
it at another time.
