Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)

Framework for understanding gases

and predicting their behaviors
Links the microscopic properties to the
macroscopic properties of gases
Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)

Gases consist of molecules that move

very fast in a series of straight –line
paths. Each kind of matter is made up of
its own kind of molecules.
Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)

The distance between gas molecules is very

wide, so wide that the volume occupied by
the molecules themselves is negligible
compared to the volume of the container in
which the gas is held.
Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)
The average kinetic energy of the
molecules is proportional to the Kelvin
temperature. In any sample of gas at a
given temperature, average kinetic energy
means some of the molecules have more
energy, while others have less.
Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)

Gas molecules are so far apart and are

moving so rapidly that the forces of
attraction between them are negligible.
Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)

Gas collision are said to be completely

elastic, meaning no energy lost as heat
goes to the walls of the container.

which of the three is false. Rewrite the
false statement to correct it.

1.
a. The gas molecules in a gas tank moves
faster during summer than in rainy days.
b. The gas molecules from the leak of a
LPG tank pushes the surrounding.
c. The gas particles in a tank with higher
pressure collides more frequently than
with a lower pressure.
2.
a. Gas molecules have more kinetic energy
during summer than during rainy days.
b. The short distance between the gas
molecules allows them to be
compressed.
c. A container containing gas molecules is
mostly empty space.
3.
a. The gas molecules have strong force of
attraction which allows the collisions.
b. As the gas molecules collide, energy is
transferred from one particle to another.
c. As gas molecules are in constant, rapid
and random motion.
4.
a. As temperature increases, the gas
molecules moves faster.
b. Applying pressure on the container,
decreases the distance between the gas
molecules.
c. Gases have low density because its particles
are very small but has strong force of
attraction.
5.
a. Gases can easily diffuse since they are in
constant random motion.
b. Ideal gases have attractive force
between the particles .
c. Real gases can behave like ideal gases
when they are very far from each other.
