A cell cycle is a series

of events that takes
place in a cell as it
grows and divides.
Happens at Purpose to produce 2 identical
Somatic(body) daughter cells
Vocabulary CHROMOSOMES
DNA (deoxyribonucleic - are tightly packed DNA
found only during cell division
acid) carries the genetic
information/code.
When cell is not dividing…
● DNA molecules in extended,
uncondensed form = chromatin
When cell is preparing for
division…
● DNA molecules condense to form
prior to division.
– each chromosome is a single molecule of
DNA
– easier to sort and organize the replicated
DNA into daughter cells
• chromosomes condense
• spindle fibers form
(spindle fibers are specialized
microtubules
radiating out from centrioles)
• chromosomes are captured by spindle
• disapperance of nuclear envelope &
nucleus
• chromosomes align
at the middle of the
cell facing each pole
• the spindle fibers pull
away the sister
chromatids toward the
poles
• the spindle fibers move
apart
• Nuclear envelopes form
again
• chromosomes cluster
and become less
condensed at opposite
poles
Cytokinesis is the physical process of cell division, which divides
the cytoplasm of a parental cell into two daughter cells
PLANT CELL ANIMAL CELL
Why is it important
that the daughter
cell is identical
?

with the parent

cell?
summary of Mitosis phase
It has 2 rounds of
cell division
Happens at Purpose to produce sex to produce 4 different
germ (sex) cell (sperm/egg) cells daughter cells
LETS START WITH
(first round of cell division)
LETS PROCEED WITH
MEIOSIS II
(second round of cell division)
non homologous
chromosomes align
at the
middle/equatorial
plate
the
centromeres
split
