What is rhythm?
Rhythm is a flow of movement of
things that we see and hear. In Music,
rhythm is the pattern of sounds (notes)
and silences (rest) based on time duration.
1. Distinction Between Sound and Silence
Music is made up of sounds and silence.
Musical sound is represented by notes. The sound of
the note may be long or short depending on the
value.

How do images relate sound and silence
in music?
The concept of rhythm could be
understood better in terms of sound and
silence.
How do you respond to rhythm?
• There are many ways to respond to rhythm.
Some of these are bodily movements such as
walking, marching, hopping or skipping.
• The more common ways to respond to
rhythm are clapping and tapping. Composers use
stick notation such as: │for long sound, ∏ for
short sound, and for musical silence to represent
the beat. Syllables are also used in chanting. The
syllables La is for long sound, and Li-li for the
shorter and faster sound.
2. Steady Beats
• Steady beat is a continious, repititive sound or
pulse that can be heard or felt. Below is a
pattern of steady beat in 4’s.
• The pulse on beat can be strong or weak. The first
beat is usually the strong beat. It is marked with an
accent (>). The accent is placed above the sticks or
notes.
Some music has beats grouped into two’s
It is called duple meter.
Some music has beats grouped into three’s
It is called triple meter.
Some music has beats grouped into four’s
It is called quadruple meter.
3. Simple Rhythmic Patterns
A song is made up of sets of notes and
rests. It is put together by a composer. Some
notes are long and some are short. When the
notes and rests are arranged, we have a
rhythmic pattern.

• Rhythmic patterns are group of notes or
rests with a given time duration. Musical
notes and rests are grouped together to
create a rhythmic pattern. They are grouped in
2’s, 3’s and 4’s to create a rhythmic pattern.
• Rhythm in 2’s = ││
• Rhythm in 3’s = │ ││
• Rhythm in 4’s = ││││
4. Ostinato
• Ostinato is a short pattern notes, which is
played repeatedly in a music piece.
• Sometimes, a rhythm or rhythm pattern is
repeated over and over. The short pattern of
notes which is repeated many times is called
ostinato.
5. Musical Symbols and Concepts:
• Notes and Rests
Music is made of sounds and silences.
Symbols are used to indicated sounds and
silences. The symbol for musical sound is the
note. The rest is for silent music. The notes and
rests also represent beat.
• Meters
While the beats are moving, they are grouped in
twos, threes or fours. The groupings of beats in
twos, threes or fours is called meter. The word
“meter” came from the Greek word “metron”
which means “to measure”.
• Simple Time Signature
Time signature is a fraction –like number
that tells you the amount and types of notes
contained in a measure. The number above tells
you the number of beats in a measure. The
number below tells you what note receives one
beat.
• In 2/4 time signature, each measure will have
two equal beats and a quarter note receives
one (1) beat.
• In 3/4 time signature, each measure will have
three equal beats and a quarter note receives
one (1) beat.
• In 4/4 time signature, each measure will have
four equal beats and a quarter note receives
one (1) beat.
