 COURSE DESCRIPTION
> This course provides students
with the fundamental
knowledge of translation.
> The course deals with
translation theories which
include definitions, types,
methods, procedures, and
techniques of translation..
> The activities are lectures, discussions, and
practices.
> The assesment will be based on students’
participation in classroom, mid-term and
final examinations. The evaluation will be
based on individual performances while group
works are also encouraged.

 Goals
By the end of this course, students are expected to;

 have an adequate knowledge on translation,

 be able to translate different types of texts either from English to
Indonesian or vice versa using the proper methods, procedures, and
techniques of translation;
 be able to conduct basic analysis on translated texts and identify
translation problems within them to find the solutions.
 Learning Materials per Session
• History of translation: translation before the 20th
century
• Definitions of translation: translation as a product
and a process
• Types of translation: intralingual, interlingual, and
intersemiotic translation
• Methods and procedures of translation: literal and
non-literal (free) translation
• Techniques of translation: borrowing, transposition,
paraphrasing, adaptation
• Translator: fields of work, sworn translators,
translators association.
• Mid-term examination
 Learning Materials per Session
• Introducing CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools
• Translation practice: narrative & descriptive texts
• Translation practice: expository & argumentative
texts
• Translation problems: grammatical & semantical
equivalence/non-equivalence
• Translation problems: cultural differences
• Translation analysis: problems of non-equivalences
• Translation evaluation: accurate, clear, and natural
translation
• Final examination
 Individual Assignment
