The most commonly used measure of central

position is the arithmetic mean or mean. The mean

is the sum of the item values divided by the number
of items.

The elements in a set of data may be arranged

and grouped resulting in a frequency
distribution table.

2. Coded-deviation Method
1. Long Method

σ 𝑓𝑥
𝑥ഥ =
𝑛
To find the mean of a grouped data using the long
method, use the formula:
σ 𝑓𝑥
𝑥ഥ =
𝑛
Where:
f = frequency of the class interval
x = is the midpoint of the class interval
n = number of items grouped
Example 1:

The table below shows the grade of 50 students in

Advance Algebra. Calculate the mean distribution.

Class 90-94 85-89 80-84 75-79 70-74

Interval
Frequency 7 13 16 8 6
Solution:

Class f X fx
Interval
90-94 7 92 644
85-89 13 87 1131
80-84 16 82 1312
75-79 8 77 616
70-74 8 72 432
n=50 σ 𝒇𝒙=4135
Substituting in the formula,

σ 𝑓𝑥
𝑥ഥ =

4135
𝑥ഥ =

2. Coded-deviation Method

σ(𝒇𝒅′) ഥ’ - assumed mean of the given

𝒙
ഥ=𝒙
𝒙 ഥ’ + [ ](𝒊) set
𝒏
𝒅′ - unit deviation from the
reference point
𝒊 - size of the class interval
𝒏- number of items grouped
2. Coded-deviation Method
Where:
σ 𝒇𝒅 A.M = assumed mean of
ഥ = 𝑨. 𝑴 +
𝒙 [ σ ](𝒊) the given set
𝒇
d’ = unit deviation from
the reference point
i = size of the class
interval
n = number of items
grouped
The calculation of the arithmetic mean may be
shortened by using the coded-deviation method.
The steps are:
1. Take the midpoint of one of the intervals, an arbitrary
reference point, as assumed mean 𝑥’ҧ . As far as the
result is concerned, it makes no difference which
interval midpoint is used.
2. After the frequency and midpoint columns, f and x,
make another column to represent unit deviations from
the arbitrary reference point. Label it as d'. Since there
is no deviation at the reference point, place zero at that
point and complete the column; positive deviations
above and negative deviation below it.
3. Make another column and label it as fd'. Multiply each
f by it's d' and enter the product in this column.
4. Get the sum of fd' to obtain σ 𝒇𝒅′
Find the mean of the given example. Using coded
deviation.
