WHAT IS POP ART?
 Most popular art movements of the Modern
Era.
 Art form that reflected a return to material
realities of people’s everyday life. “Pop”, return
to popular culture.
 Relies on extracting material from its context
and isolating it with other subjects
contemplation.

 The term Pop-Art was invented by


British curator Lawrence Alloway in
1955, to describe a new form of
"Popular" art - a movement
characterized by the imagery of
consumerism and popular culture.

 Pop Art is a direct descendant of


Dadaism in the way it mocks the
established art world by
appropriating images from the
street, the supermarket, the mass
media, and presents it as art in
itself.

 This happened with the transition from


Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art.
 Mid-1950s in Britain but was present in
United States by late 1960s
 By the 1960’s, the subject matter and artistic
forms of Pop Art, as well as the rock music of
the time, reflected the cultural characteristics.
