What are
Rail- Guided
Vehicles?
Rail-guided vehicles are
self-propelled vehicles that
ride on a fixed-rail system.
The fixed-rail
system
may be:

Overhead
monorail On-floor
suspended overhead
from the ceiling parallel fixed two-rail
system, generally
protrude up from the
floor
Routing variations
are possible in rail
systems through a
combination of
turntables,
switches, and
other specialised
track sections. This
allows different
loads to travel
different route.
RGVs vs
AGVs
Rail-Guided Vehicles (RGV) are similar to
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) in
design and function. Both are typically
used in industry for transporting materials.
While Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)
follow a flexible path and serve entire
plants, Rail Guided Vehicles (RGV) are used
to transport materials between 2 (or a
relatively low number) points, often moving
RGVs are generally considered to
be

more versatile than conveyor systems

but

less versatile than AGVs

History
of Rail Transport

6th Century BC
Wheeled vehicles pulled
by men and animals ran
in grooves in limestone

1500s
Wooden rails were
introduced
History
of Rail Transport

1760s
Plates of cast iron were
fixed on the upper surface
of the wooden rails

1784

locomotive was built

Currently, RGVs utilized in

material handling are
driven by an on-board
electric motor, with power
being supplied by an
electrified rail.

Sorting Transfer Vehicle (STV) is a fast,

flexible and easily installed material
transport system. STVs can be used to
move loads of all sizes in a warehouse. It
enables picking by order line and sorting
by destination to one. The STV track can
be arranged in a loop or straight line to
accommodate a variety of applications.
