INTRODUCTION :-
• In the era where development is at its peak, Concrete has became the
most important construction material.
• Rapid infrastructural development in India has resulted in huge scarcity of
construction materials and increase in waste production.
• Due to the vast amount of concrete being produced and the huge amount
of demolition waste from old concrete structures, the reuse of concrete
waste by the construction industry is becoming increasingly important.
• To overcome the above problem there is a need to switch on to sustainable
concrete development.
• In this project attempt has made to use demolition and ceramic waste as a
replacement of coarse aggregate in concrete.
OBJECTIVES :-
Following are the objectives of the project work:-
• To determine the properties of aggregate that is to be used as replacement
of coarse aggregate in concrete.
• To determine the mechanical properties of concrete using constructional &
demolition waste
• To determine the mechanical properties of concrete using ceramic waste.
• To compare the properties of concrete(when using crushed aggregate) with
conventional concrete.
LITERATURE REVIEW :-
• A brief overview of the engineering properties of recycled aggregates have
been well documented in the journal[1]The effect of recycled aggregate on the
properties of fresh and hardened concrete have also been discussed.
• From the analysis of journal[1] we found that Recycled aggregate concrete was
in close proximity to normal concrete in terms of split tensile strength and
compressive strength. The slump value of recycled aggregate was low that can
be further improved by using saturated surface dry aggregate.
• From the journal[2] we came to know about the various experimental
investigations to be carried out to access the effect of partial replacement of
coarse aggregate by demolished aggregate on workability and compressive
strength of concrete. The journal conclude that “The compressive strength of
recycled concrete up to 30% coarse aggregate replacement by demolished
waste at the end of 28 days has been found to be comparable to the
conventional concrete”.
• The paper[3] mentioned about the various problems of recycled aggregate like
high water absorption than natural aggregate. We will be trying to reduce the
water absorption capacity by treating the recycled aggregates with epoxy
resin.
METHODOLOGY :-
• In this experimental study we are replacing coarse aggregate with
demolition waste with (0%, 25%, 50%) replacement.
• Specific gravity test, water absorption test, and grain size distribution
test will be performed on crushed aggregates.
• To decrease the water absorption capacity of crushed aggregates,
epoxy resin will be used.
• Concrete Mix design preparation.
• Check for the workability using slump value test will be performed.
• Casting of concrete cubes will be done with different percentage
replacement of coarse aggregate by crushed (recycled) aggregate.
• Compressive Strength Test will be performed on specimens at the
interval of 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days.
DETAILS OF WORK CARRIED OUT :-

• Particle size distribution of coarse aggregate obtained from

demolition waste (concrete block) has been carried out.
• Determined the specific gravity of coarse aggregate in
laboratory.
• Aggregate crushing value test has been performed on
coarse aggregates.
• Determination of water absorption of coarse aggregate has
been carried out.

1.WATER ABSORPTION AND SPECIFIC GRAVITY DETERMINATION

A = weight in g of saturated surface-dry sample=500g

B = weight in g of pycnometer or gas jar containing sample and filled with distilled
water =1858g
C = weight in g of pycnometer or gas jar filled with distilled water only=1556g
D = weight in g of oven-dried sample=495g

Specific gravity= D/(A-(B-C))=495/{500-(1858-1556)}=2.5

Water Absorption=100*(A-D)/D=100*(500-495)/495=1.01%
EXPECTED OUTCOME:-
• Evaluation of mechanical Properties of concrete using
crushed aggregate.
• By using epoxy resin we can reduce the water absorption
capacity of coarse aggregate.
• Using of crushed aggregate in concrete makes the
concrete economical and resource efficient.
