Objectives

• To compare and be aware of present/


past concept of physical fitness
• To classify the different components of
physical fitness and interpret each
component.
• Assess the effect of sedentary or absence
of regular physical fitness activities.
• Suggest ways to improve physical fitness
levels.
What is Physical Fitness?
1. Old concept/ Definition
“The ability to carry out daily task with
vigor and alertness, without fatigue and
with ample energy to enjoy leisure time
pursuits and meet unforeseen
emergencies.”
2. New concept/Definition
“ Physical fitness is a dynamic state of energy
and vitality that enables one to carry out daily
task, active leisure time pursuits and meet
unforeseen emergencies without undue
fatigue, but also helps to avoid hypo kinetic
diseases, while functioning at the peak of
intellectual capacity.”

Health-Related Physical Fitness Components

Cardiovascular Endurance
• The ability to continue or persist in
strenuous tasks involving large muscle
groups for extended period of time.
•As seen in: Daily task, distance running,
lap swimming, hiking etc.
Muscular Endurance
• The ability of your muscles to exert
force against resistance over a sustained
period of time.

• As seen in: Handwriting, car washing,


weight training, and calisthenics.
Muscular Strength
• The combination of muscular force and
the speed of movement

•As seen in: Pushing a car, weightlifting,


and strength training.
Skill-Related Physical Fitness Components

Speed
• The ability to perform a
movement with a short period of
time.
• As seen in: Chasing a bus/ jeep,
sprinting, jumping, etc.
Power

• The rate at which one can perform work


(strength over time)

• The ability to do strength performances quickly


Agility

• Theability to rapidly change the


position of the entire body in space,
with speed and accuracy.

• As seen in: Basketball, soccer, table


tennis
Flexibility

• The ability to bend any part of


the body without breaking.

• As seen in: Dancing, gymnastics,


basketball and other ball games.
Balance

• The ability to maintain equilibrium


despite extraneous influences or force.

• As seen in: Standing on a moving


and turning bus, gymnastics,
basketball, etc.
Coordination
• The ability to combine several distinct
movement patterns into a singular
distinct movement.

•As seen in: Sports


Reaction Time
•The time elapsed between
stimulation and the beginning of
the reaction to it.

• As seen in: Sprint starts, defense


in basketball, tennis, etc.
