ACTIVE LISTENING
Definition: “The act of mindfuly hearing and attempting to
comprehend the meaning of words spoken by another in a
conversation or speech”

Well if you talk about communication listening comes first:
• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing
DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN LISTENING AND HEARING

HEARING LISTENING

• Accidental • Focused
• Involuntary • Voluntary
• Effortless • Intentional
CRUX OF LISTENING
• Understand the person:
• Perceive the person: (to notice everything)
• To sense the Person:(sense the emotions of
someone words)
• To feel the person:(put yourself into the
other person shoes, to feel the person own
feeling)
ACTIVE LISTENING INVOLVE SIX (6) MAJOR STEPS

• Hearing: Hear everything the speaker is saying

• Filtering: Filter the important informations in that particular speech of the


speaker
• Comprehending: Grasp the important messages of someone’s speech with
the help of your mind
• Remembering: Remember few things which you think are the most important
ones
• Responfing: In listening you can’t be a statue, you need to respond to the
person you are listening to.And because of this the speaker believe that you
are really Listening to him.
• Completing:if you achieve the above five steps (CONGRATULATIONS) You
TYPES OF ACTIVE LISTENING
• Discriminative listening: Start at the very early age when you are in your
mother’s womb (Deal only with the differentiation of sounds not the meaning
• Comprehension listening: (Content Listening)
Deal with understanding the meaning behind the words & phrases that the
speaker has said.
• Evaluative listening: (Critical listening)
To criticize the speaker, and when you are a Listener you try to understand
wether what he’s saying is online with your own believes, values & principles.
If it is not, you try to not listen to him. (Not a correct thing to do).
• Attentive Listening: (a very nice kind of listening)
• Because you really trying to put all of your 100% attention to the speaker and
really focusing on what he’s saying
• Selective Listening: Listening to only A part of the information which the
particular speaker is saying (not a good type of listening)
TYPES OF ACTIVE LISTENING
• Empathetic listening: The kind of listening I would urge all of you listeners to
really try and attempt (Empathetic listening). In this type of listening you you
are trying to understand the speaker from his point of view meaning (try to
put yourself into their shoes and understanding the feelings behind those
words and sentences that the speaker is really sharing with you)

BARRIERS TO ACTIVE LISTENING
Physical Barriers: Psychological Barriers:
• Noise • State of health
• Poor acoustic • Disability
• Defective mechanical devices • Wondering attention
• Frequent interruption • Personal anxiety
• Uncomfortable environment
• Attitude
• Message overload
NON VERBAL SIGNS OF ACTIVE LISTENING
• Smile

• Eye contact

• Posture

• Distractions
VERBAL SIGNS OF ACTIVE LISTENING
• Positive Reinforcement: (HmHm, really, Did that happened)
• Remembering: Remember things that the speaker is saying (Note imp Points)
• Questioning: Ask the speaker questions about the topic which he is talking about
• Reflection: Try to reflect on The mood and the senses of the speaker
• Clarification: Clarify things but when the speaker is speaking don’t interrupt him in
between,it can be annoying for the speaker
• Summarization: Summarize the entire message of the speaker in few simple words
(show the speaker that you are actively listening to him)

really want to actively listen.
