which stimulate growth, development,
or change within a system or process.

What is CULTURE?
Culture can be basically
characterized as the people’s way
of life which is shared by other
people living in a certain cultural
region.
MULTICULTURALISM
Multiculturalism is a kind of cultural
environment where many different cultures
are interacting inside a particular social
sphere. Culture occupies a large domain in
the life of man. Everything a man does in his
everyday living is dominated by his cultural
orientation.
 Culture can be defined as the values, beliefs,
behavior and material objects that together form a
people’s way of life (Macionis 2007)

Culture and human intelligence is also linked


together. Sociologists and anthropologists agree
that culture is a product of human intelligence.
Culture was shaped by human’s intelligence.
CULTURAL UNIVERSALS AND PARTICULARS

According to George Murdock (1945) culture has


similarities and differences starting from the so
called CULTURAL UNIVERSALS and PARTICULARS
CULTURAL UNIVERSALS- are the
things that all cultures have such as
the need for interaction, utilization
of resources and leadership.
CULTURAL PARTICULARS- are
the specific practices that
distinguish cultures from one
another (Ferrante 2014.)
Material and Non-Material
Culture.
CULTURE CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO:

1. MATERIAL CULTURE- any physical or material


things that people createwhich reflects their
different cultural orientations. (EXAMPLES:
CARS, BOOKS, PENCILS, FOOD, CLOTHING AND
ETC.)
2. NON-MATERIAL CULTURE- intangible
human creations which does not exist in
the material world but can be reflected
through the human intellect and human
actions. (EXAMPLES: PHILOSOPHY,
TRADITIONS, NORMS, VALUES, CUSTOM
AND NORMS.)
Cultural Diversity- the existence of a variety of
cultural or ethnic groups within a society.

CULTURAL CAPITAL- it includes all material


and non-material culture that a person has
access to which could be useful or not in a
social environment.
3 CLASSIFICATIONS OF CULTURAL CAPITAL

1. OBJECTIFIED CULTURAL CAPITAL- this refers to all


material and non-material culture that a person has or has a
direct access to. Objectified cultural capital is also has a
value and symbolic meaning that people impute to them.
2. Embodied cultural capital- refers to all kinds of material
and non-material objects that have been internalized by the
people in a conscious or unconscious manner. Embodied
cultural capital is learned by man through the process of
socialization.
3. Institutionalized cultural capital- this cultural
capital consists of all material and non-material culture
that everyone considers as desirable in a given social
setting. Institutionalized cultural capital is very
important to success in a certain social environment.
Examples are career, academic qualifications and
profession.
SUBCULTURE AND COUNTERCULTURE

SUBCULTURE- rooted form the values,


norms and traditions.
COUNTERCULTURE- refers to the kind
of subculture that goes against the
mainstream culture.
CULTURE SHOCK- THE FEELING OF
UNUSUAL UNEASINESS AND MENTAL STRESS
BECAUSE OF AN EXPERIENCE OF ANOTHER
CULTURE WHICH IS CONTRARY TO ONE’S
HOME CULTURE.
