PROJECTIONS
Natural disasters such as bushfires have had a
substantial impact in this region and in many cases have
been compounded by difficulties experienced in the
recovery phase. Many of those interviewed spoke of their
experiences with reference to the most recent bushfires
during the summers of 2003 and again in 2006–07. --
Repetition of cycle.
If you take the 2003 bushfires, we had a real issue with
tourism just stopping, and that meant we had a lot of work
to do there, just in changing perceptions and getting people
back to the region because it is such an important part of
our economy...(interview, held in Bright, 22 May 2007)
Another problem raised was the difficulties many of these
operators faced in accessing disaster relief funds from
state and federal governments. As one council officer
explains,
