Reference Lines
Referencing and Dimensioning:

1. Reference are placed on either interior walls or

columns
2. Dimensions from centers of equipment to reference
lines
3. Designations of letters for vertical lines
4. Designations of numbers for horizontal lines

Architectural Features
The size, arrangement, and shape of power plant building are
principally affected by the type of plant.

Generalized features for power plants building:

1. Roof- generally flat,
2. Roof deck- can be carried on trusses and purlins, and concrete slabs
and beams
3. Floor- concrete or concrete tile
4. Doors and windows- preferably steel
5. Walkways near highly charged parts are hazardous unless well
illuminated.

Architectural Features
Hydroelectric Plants:

Building and foundation of the hydraulic plant are most important.

Architectural Features
Steam Plants:

Three classes of building treatment:

1. Boiler room- head room is highly required.
2. Turbine room- show room of the plant. Spacious,
uncrowded and well lighted
3. Electrical bays- contains switch boards, control boards,
relay panels, motor-generator-battery sets. If built in
concrete, the reinforcing steel placement should receive the
study of an electrical engineer to eliminate the chance of
induced currents.

Chimney
The product of combustion from the furnace must be
discharged to the atmosphere in an appropriate manner.

Chimney must be 30-60 m above the plant from the

architectural stand point.

Chimney
Types of chimney:

1. Steel Chimneys- High steel chimneys are usually built

for small, natural draft boilers

2. Reinforced Concrete Chimneys

3. Masonry Chimneys

Machine Foundations
It is the supporting part of the structure. It is a transmission or
structural connection whose design depends on the characteristics of
both the structure and the soil and the rock beneath.

Function of machine foundation:

1. To support the weight of the machine and distribute this weight and its
own over safe subsoil area.
2. To absorb vibrations produced by the machine
3. To maintain the proper alignment of the machine

Machine Foundations
The machine foundation performs far more than the simple bearing
function of wall footing. The machine foundation must:

1. Distribute the weight of machine, the machine plate, and its weight
over a safe subsoil area.
-If heavy unbalanced vertical kinetic forces are produce by the
machine, they should be added to the dead load weight to obtain
bearing area. The dead weight must be well in excess of these vertical
forces2
2. Provide sufficient mass to absorb machine vibration.
-Satisfactory foundation weight for this factor is not readily
calculable.
