We need to learn how to ...
3
1. Make right use of the reading time
5
3. Choose questions wisely
✘ Usually, some questions in the paper require
student to make choices and write answers. Do
not make a hasty decision while choosing the
questions to attempt.
✘ Name / List
✘ Describe
✘ Explain / Discuss
✘ Compare/ Contrast /Differentiate
7
5. .How much to Write?
✘ 1 mark question needs a short, precise answer (usually a
definition – make sure you know these by heart!)
✘ 2 marks – expand on your answer and give a
scientific/logical reason/explanation (because…) or add
another point
✘ 3 marks – give another point or quote in addition to
what you would write for 2 marks. Writing 3-4 lines is
sufficient in about 40 words. If it's English or Social
Science, you can extend the answer to not more than 50
words.

How much to Write for 4 or 5 Mark Questions?
✘ DO NOT write your answers in paragraphs. It is difficult for
teachers to calculate how many points you’ve written and you
may end up getting less marks for your answer.
✘ Before mentioning the points, give a one line introduction. For
example- Following are some reasons for the poverty in India-
(next line) (i)… (ii).. and so on.
✘ Write at-least 5 points for a 5-mark question. If still there are
some important points left to address the question effectively
and completely, feel free to write all of them (if time permits).
✘ Do not write the same point again by rearranging the words of
sentences.
9
6. Attempt all the questions.
10
7. Don’t decorate the answer sheet.
✘ Use only two colour pens; a blue pen for
writing the text and black for headings.
✘ While drawing diagrams, you must
always use a pencil. It would keep your
answer sheet simple and would give
you time to write more as well.
11
8. Space out each word, Write neatly
✘ Make sure your words are properly spaced out. Don’t
squeeze in too many words in the same line. Examiner
will find it difficult to read such overlapped words.
✘ Your paper should look neat and legible. Try to write
the answers in points. Avoid bunching all sentences
together.
✘ Leave at least two lines before and after each
question. Doing this will also help you later, when you
feel you want to add something to your answer. This
will prevent you making a mess of your answer script.
12
9. Don’t Panic
✘ It’s not always possible for you to know
everything. There may be some questions
which you find beyond your knowledge. At such
times, don’t panic or be afraid.
✘ If you’re stressed you won’t be even able to
answer those questions which you know quite
well. Think wisely. Be calm and focused.
✘ You will have plenty of time to think and frame
the answers to all questions. All you need is to
act sensibly and keep up the confidence.
13
10. General Guidelines
✘ Label the diagrams properly wherever
required, and use a scale to draw the lines,
write on the right hand side of the diagram
✘ For a question of comparison/differences,
always make separate columns
✘ Always write your Name/ Roll no. on
Graphs/Maps
✘ If possible, and there is enough time,
underline the key words in your answers
14
General Guidelines
✘ In Mathematics, Rough Work should be
done on the right side of the answer
sheet in pen (not pencil)
✘ Geometry diagrams should be copied
onto the answer script first, before
solving the question
✘ All the steps of the word problem should
be written
15
11. Check your Answer Sheet before submission
✘ After you have completed the paper don’t
forget to check your answer sheet. Check
what you have written.
✘ Check if you have answered all the required
questions.
✘ Also make sure that you have written your
roll number and name neatly and properly
before handing over the sheet to examiner.
