DISASTER

PREPAREDNESS

- Floran Michael S. Grado

WHAT ?

- DISASTER PREPAREDNESS is defined as the

knowledge and capacities developed by governments,
professional response and recovery organizations,
communities and individuals to effectively anticipate,
respond to, and recover from impacts of likely, imminent or
current hazard events or conditions.
DISASTER

- a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the

functioning of a community or society and causes human,
material, and economic or environmental losses that
exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its
own resources. Though often caused by nature, disasters
can have human origins.
PREPAREDNESS

- Preparedness refers to a very concrete research-based

set of actions that are taken as precautionary measures in
the face of potential disasters. These actions can include
both physical preparations and trainings for emergency
action.

…Preparedness is based on a sound analysis of DRR and

good linkages with early warning systems and includes
such activities as contingency planning, stockpiling of
equipment and supplies, the development of arrangements
for coordination, evacuation and public information
associated training and field exercises.

RING of FIRE
- the Ring of Fire, also referred to as the Circum-Pacific
Belt, is a path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by
active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. It is the home
of approximately 75% of the world’s volcanoes. There are
450 volcanoes located here.

... Philippines lies off the southeast coast of the Asian

mainland, a little above the equator. It belongs to the
Pacific Ring of Fire where two major tectonic plates meet
(Philippine Sea and Eurasian). This is the reason why the
Philippines is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
NDRRMC
- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
Council (NDRRMC), formerly known as the National
Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), is a working group
of various government, non-government, civil sector and
private sector organizations of the Government of the
Republic of the Philippines established by Republic Act
10121 of 2010.
- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
Council (NDRRMC) is the agency tasked to prepare for,
and respond to, natural calamities, like typhoons and
earthquakes. It also monitors human-induced
emergencies, such as armed conflicts and maritime
accidents.
