Interjection

The act of uttering exclamation.

Cambridge Dictionary
A word that is used to show a short
sudden expression of emotion.
 Is a part of speech which is more commonly used
in informal language than in formal writing or
speech.

 Basically, the function of interjection is to


express emotions or sudden burst lf feelings

 emotions such as: excitement, joy, surprise, or


disgust
 Comes in many forms such as single
word, phrase, or even a short clause

 They are usually (but not always) placed at


the beginning of the sentence.

Ahem – the sound of someone clearing their
throat and means “attention” or “listen”

Ahem! Could you please listen to the discussion?

Alas – expressing grief or pity

Alas! I failed the exam.


Aah – this is used as a call for help or when
someone is scared

Aah! There is a cockroach on my bed.

Boo – used to scare someone or to voice


disapproval
Dear – expressing pity or surprise

Dear, I didn’t realize it was that serious!

Eh – this is used when you didn’t hear or


understand what someone said

Eh? What’s that again?


Eww – shows dislike or disgust

Eww, that’s disgusting!

Hey – calling attention, surpise or joy

Hey! Watch where you’re going.


Hmm – This can mean you are thinking or
hesitating

Hmm… That’s an interesting idea.

Jeez – Could mean you can’t believe something,


or you are exasperated.

Jeez, that was one helluva week!


Ouch – expressing pain

Ouch! You stepped on my foot!

Ooh-la-la – a slightly comical way to refer to


something as fancy or special.

Ooh-la-la. That chick is so hot and beautiful.


Oops – an exclamation people use when they
accidentally do something.

Oops! I didn’t mean to hear what you two are


talking about.

Phew - this expresses relief or that you are glad


something is over.

Phew! Thank God we’re done with our verse

Whoa – this can show surprise or amazement

Whoa! What’s with the mess on your bed?

Yahoo – Expresses joy or happiness.

Yeah – This shows a very strong affirmation or
approval.

Yeah! What you did is really correct.

Yoo-hoo – this is used to get someone’s


attention and is usually used by women.

Yoo-hoo! Anybody there?
