APPRECIATION
Humanities and the Arts

HUMANITIES
– It comes from the Latin word “Humanus” meaning
human, cultured, and refined. Thus, we can define
it as the study of how humans have expressed
themselves through the arts throughout history.
– It aims to offer happiness to human being.
– It also aims to direct human being achieved
happiness without money as instrument or anything
that belonged to the world.
Why study Humanities?

– It provides us with opportunity to examine


what it takes and what it means to be human.
– It helps us recognize fundamental values and
principles such as beauty, truth, love,
justice, and faith.
– It develops our capacity for critical
thinking and appreciation for cultural
heritage as reflected in different Filipino
works of art.
Fundamental Principles of
the Humanities
– Human nature is inherently good
– Individuals are free and are capable of making choices
– Human potential for growth and development is
virtually unlimited
– Self-concept plays an important role in growth and
development
– Individuals have an urge for self-actualization
– Reality is defined by each person
– Individuals have a responsibility to both themselves
and to others
Nature of the Arts

ART
– Comes from the Aryan root ar which
means ‘to join’ or ‘put together’
– Latin term sars or artis means
everything that is artificially made
or composed by man

– Art is subjective
– Art provides enjoyment and stimulation,
particularly when people try to understand
them.
– Art provides people with an image of
themselves to enable to further understand
their nature.
– Art provides a way to showcase their passions
and desires
Functions of Art

– The human need for expression


– The social need for display,
celebration, and communication
– The physical needs for functional
objects
Art: As Viewed by Philosophy

PHILOSOPHY
– a field of discipline that attempts to
explain almost all aspects of human behavior.
AESTHETICS
– the philosophical study of beauty and taste.
Artists and Artisans

ARTIST
– a person who exhibits exceptional skills
in the visual and/or the performing arts.
– they are more perceptive and more
creative
– words, pigments, clay, stone, musical
notes or any combination that may best
represent his message.

ARTISAN
– person who is in a skilled trade that involves
making things by hand.
– their works can be functional or decorative (e.g.
palayok or vase for decoration)
– some of the well-known are the wood carvers of
Paete, Laguna, the ceramic makers of Tiwi, Albay,
the basket weavers of Pangasinan, and the pinya
weavers of Kalibo, Aklan.

PAINTING
- the application of pigment to a surface
- a two-dimensional art form
- examples are Juan Luna’s Spolarium and Da Vinci’s Mona
Lisa

SCUPLTURE
– a three-dimensional art form
– sculptor creates a solid form using molding, carving,
welding, casting, and assembling (e.g. Mac Arthur Shrine and
Edsa Monument)

ARCHITECTURE
– most functional art form
– involves creating designs for buildings and
infrastructures (e.g. CCP Complex and Pantheon)

MUSIC
– art of sound expressed through a song, through the use
of instruments, or a combination of both.
– should express rhythm, harmony, and melody that is
soothing or appeals to the taste of its audience.

DANCE
– art of body movements that is attuned to a musical
piece.
– body movements should be graceful and in rhythm with
the accompanying musical piece.

LITERATURE
– art of using words to express thoughts, ideas, and
feelings
– can be in a form of poetry, novel, short story, essay,
epic, and legends

– performance of drama
– combined or performing arts (e.g. Phantom of the
Opera, The Wicked)
