What is a Disability?

A Physical or Mental
condition that limits a person’s
movements, senses or
activities is called a
‘Disability’.

DISABILITY
There are 5 types of disabilities
Mental disabilities
Physical disabilities
Deaf and mute
disabilities
Visual disabilities
Intellectual
disabilities

DISABILITY
 A mental disorder, also called a mental illness
or psychiatric disorder, is a behavioral or mental
pattern that causes significant distress or impairment
of personal functioning. Such features may be
persistent, relapsing and remitting, or occur as a
single episode. Many disorders have been described,
with signs and symptoms that vary widely between
specific disorders . Such disorders may
be diagnosed by a mental health master.

Examples: Anxiety disorders , schizophrenia

Rights of mental disabilities
 Laws that may cover their rights
include: Americans with Disabilities
Act. This law protects people who have
physical and mental disabilities from
discrimination in employment,
government services and activities,
public accommodations, public
transportation, and commercial
businesses DISABILITY
PHYSICAL DISABILITY
• A physical disability is a
limitation on a person’s
physical functioning,
mobility, dexterity or
stamina. Other physical
disabilities include
impairments which limit
facets of daily living,
such as respiratory
disorders, blindness,
epilepsy and sleep
disorders

Rights of physical disabilities
 Every Child with a physical disability shall have the
rights to free education till the age of 18 years in
integrated schools or special schools.
 Public building, rail compartments, buses, ships
and air-crafts will be designed to give easy access
to the physically disabled people.
 In all public places and in waiting rooms, the
toilets shall be wheel chair accessible.
 All the places of public utility shall be made
barrier- free by providing the ramps.
DISABILITY
What is intellectual disability?
Someone with intellectual disability has
limitations in two areas. These areas
are:
Intellectual functioning. Also known
as IQ, this refers to a person’s ability to
learn, reason, make decisions, and
solve problems.
Adaptive behaviours. These are skills
necessary for day-to-day life, such as
being able to communicate effectively,
interact with others, and take care of
oneself.

Deaf and mute
 Mute is an outdate
term to refer to
someone who can’t
speak. Whereas deaf
refers to someone
who can’t hear. You
would often hear the
expression “deaf-
mute” but that has
fallen out of favor.
DISABILITY
Visual impairment (vision impairment, vision
disability) is defined as a decreased ability
to see to a degree that causes problems not
fixable by usual means, such as glasses or
medication. Visual impairment can be due to
disease, trauma, or congenital or
degenerative conditions

RIGHT OF DISABILITIES
 1) The appropriate Government shall
ensure that the persons
with disabilities enjoy the right to
equality, life with dignity and respect
for his or her integrity equally with
others. No person shall be deprived of
his or her personal liberty only on the

People call them mental
or crazy people but they
are Special People.

As a student what we can do?
 Use clear sentences, simple words while talking to
them.
 If you are speaking to a person in a wheelchair, sit
down so they don’t have to strain their neck to look up
at you.
 People with disabilities need assistance getting
around. You can volunteer to help in this regard.
 children need love, encouragement, and support

How can we make a change?

 Focus on strengths, not just weaknesses

 child is not defined by their learning disability. A


learning disability represents one area of weakness,
but there are many more areas of strengths.

Mumbai in August 2019
Our School conducted a programme for these children,
and they were presented with gifts.
