CHAPTER I

Background of Study
 ( Depdiknas 2006) The benefits of mastering English for Indonesian learner
 The aim of teaching and learning proccess is to enable the students both
oral and written (Permendikbud 2016).
 Less attention for the students speaking skill, emphasized more on the
students writing skill.
 Classroom is primary places to explore their English.
 Speaking also important skill to be mastered (Richard&Roger 1986)
 Meaning of classroom interaction based on Dagarin (2004), and (Walsh, 2011)
 (Harmer, 2007, p.345) the crucial role of the teacher regarding the problem.
 The advantages of using English in class based on :
a. Bilash 2009  it increase the students’ exposure to the target laguage.
b. Krashen 1985  gives comprehensible input to the students thus leading
to more complex languae structures
c. It gives a source of modeling for the stduents both in regard to the
production of the language and the attitude toward the language
 Previous studies
a. First is Liu (2005) investigates the Chinese University students’ reticence in
oral English classroom
b. Second is Donald (2010) investigates the issue of reticence from the
teachers’ and students’ perspective in Taiwanese University English
conversation class
c. Thid, Floris (2012) explore the voice of Indonesian students toward the use
of English as a medium instruction and toward the role of their L1 that is
Bahasa Indonesia
RESULT : students’s reluctance is still exits
Research Questions
1. How does the students show their reluctance during the pedagogy
process?
2. What are the students’s reason for their reluctance in speaking
English fully
Research Objectives
1. To describe what reasons which caused the students are reluctant
to speak English in fullY
2. To interpret the effect of the students’ reluctance to sepak English
fully during the classroom interaction.
Significances of Study
This study is expected can give contribution for English language
teaching. It is also hoped to be useful for the teacher and future
research Theoritically, the concern of reducing the students’ reluctance
in speaking English fully will increase their speaking ability. Practically by
knowing the students reluctance’s reason, the teachers will get an
overview to choose an appropriate method and techniques in teaching
English well.
Scope and Limitation
This study focuses on the students’ verbal and non verbal reaction to
shows their reason of being reluctant to speak English fully during the
pedagogy process. The Subject of the study are limited to a class of 7
grade of Junior High Scholl in a small region.
Definition of Key Terms
 Reluctance : Attitude not doing something
 Non verbal : Action distinct from speech such as eyes contact,
facial expressions, gesture, positions, and various movement of the
body
 Verbal : Using Spoken form
 Speaking English Fully : Sepaking English only
