COMPUTER

BASICS
WHAT IS A COMPUTER?
•A computer is a electronic device.
•Operates and function under the
control of instructions called
programs stored in its memory.
WHY PEOPLE USE
COMPUTER?
• To make certain task in an easy way and attain target
objectives.
• It can be used for communicational purposes
(internet).
• Others use computers for entertainment value; to
play games, watch movies and play music
WHY COMPUTER IS LIKE HUMAN BRAIN?
• The brain stores information from our senses
and then use these to guide human action
• A computer needs information to work on, and it
is called DATA
• A computer receive and accept data, then
process them using the program set by the user.
•The data entered into the computer are in
the form of text, images, sounds or video.
•The computer processes these data then
produces an output information to be used
by the people.
•Processed information are stored in the
computer’s memory.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF COMPUTERS
• A supercomputer is a computer
with a high level of performance
compared to a general-purpose
computer. The performance of
a supercomputer is commonly
measured in floating-point
operations per second (FLOPS)
instead of million instructions per
second (MIPS)
CLASSIFICATIONS OF COMPUTERS
• Mainframe
computers or mainframes (colloqui
ally referred to as "big iron")
are computers used primarily by
large organizations for critical
applications; bulk data processing,
such as census, industry and
consumer statistics, enterprise
resource planning; and transaction
processing.
• Supercomputers best known for its processing capacity is used for
some top-notch calculations like medical research, weather
forecasting. They are used data crunching and number crunching thus
having the capability to solve various scientific and engineering
problems.
• Whereas mainframes are used basically for
transaction purposes. Mainframes might need to do
millions of updates to its database in a second when it
is being used by retailers, airlines, banks etc.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF COMPUTERS
Handheld computers—also known as
personal digital assistants (PDAs)—are
small, portable devices that offer users
many of the same features and
capabilities as desktop computers at a
fraction of the size. Although the
terms “handheld
computer” and “PDA” are often used
interchangeably, handhelds tend to be
larger and feature miniature keyboards,
while PDAs tend to be smaller and rely
on a touch screen and stylus for data
entry.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF COMPUTERS
A microcomputer is a computer with a
central processing unit (CPU) as a
microprocessor. Designed for individual
use, a microcomputer is smaller than a
mainframe or a minicomputer.

The term microcomputer is not as

commonly used as it was during the
1970s-1980s. We now refer to
microcomputers as, simply, computers,
or personal computers (PC).
