 C. S. Siskind, proposed that The 2-speed motor, in which both

speeds result from consequent-pole
 winding interconnections of pole groups, possesses several
important advantages when compared with an equivalent
motor that has two windings[1].
 Prof. G. H. Rawcliffe & R. F. Burbidge, proposed that the a
very simple method of much improving the performance of 2 :
1 pole-changing induction motors.
 In spite of the extensive use of such machines for a very long
time past, windings of standard type[2].
 T . H. Barton , O. I. Butler & H. Sterling proposed that It is
shown that the primary winding of a 3-phase induction motor,
having p poles.
 it may be reconnected to constitute a 3p-pole winding of two
or three symmetrical phase windings, the latter being little
known and the former being a new type of pole-changing
connection with considerable practical possibilities[3].

 Rucha Sardar & Prof. A.R.Soman proposed that Study of dual

stator winding suggested that we can use single induction
machine for multiple operation.
 By obtaining different speed as per application by splitting the
stator single winding into two winding[4].
Introduction

 Changing the number of pole has to be incorporated at the manufacturing

stage and such a machine are called “pole changing motor” [5].
 Synchronous speed is inversely proportional to the number of poles.
120𝑓
𝑁𝑠 =
𝑝

 Squirrel cage rotor is not wound for any specific number of poles therefore
this method for only use with squirrel cage motor.
 Here, we can design a winding in two ways
I. Multiple stator winding
II. Consequent pole winding
 The basic idea of consequent poles is to split a single phase winding into
two groups of coils, and to have the capability of reversing the connections
of one of the coil groups.
 This same flux pattern can be obtained using two windings connected to
operate in parallel, If the number of poles in the machine must be
increased from 4 to 8, the supply to one of the windings can be reversed,
resulting in a 8 pole field.

 Multiple windings
The idea of consequent poles helps if the speed must change by 2, but if
other speeds are needed, one option is two wind more than one set of stator
windings onto a machine, but only operate one at a time.
 As an example, it is possible to wind both a 6 pole winding and a 2 pole
winding onto the same stator.
 If the 6-pole winding is excited, the speed will be 3 times lower than when
the 2-pole winding is excited.
 This idea is used in washing machines to switch between wash and spin
cycles.
 This approach is expensive as only half of the copper in the machine is
active at any one time and the stator slots must be made large enough to fit
two sets of windings, rather than just one. [5]

Advantage

 Compare to other motor ,it has less power loss[3].

 The system is much simpler and easier to use compared to

other speed control methods available.

 Dual speed motor runs at two speed’s at as our requirement.

 Efficient energy saving[4].

 Easy to maintenance.
Disadvantage

 Fast mechanical wear and tear[3].

 In motor connection also produces high harmonic

distortion during the shifting of poles as the angular distance
between the power generated increases as the poles are
decreased in the motor[4].
Application

 Pumps, wherein two speeds can be used to control the output flow.

 Fan’s to get variable air flow output.

 Crusheers

 Milling applications.

 Cranes , where two speeds can be used in hoisting applications: one

speed for material movement and the other for positioning the
material held in the hoist[2].
 MACHINE TOOLS

A number of gears, that are used to get different speeds can.g.4/12be

reduced by using double/tripple/four speed squirrel cage induction motor ,
as drive for machine tool[2].

 LIFTS & ELEVATORS

Here wide ratio pole changing motors are used

e.g.4/12p,4/16p,6/18p,6/24p[2].

 CENTRIFUGES

For stirring the paste, low speed is used at start & for finishing operation
higher speed is used[2] .

 RUBBER &PLASTIC INDUSTRY

For different quality of ingredient, the mixing cycle is to be different in the

mixers employed in rubber & plastic industries[2].
Purposed work

 Purchase the parts of motor for 1 Hp.

 Designing stator winding by using consequent pole

method[5].

 Assembling.

 Testing the speed of motor.

Approximate cost

Parameter cost(Rs)
1 HP 3 phase Motor - 4800

Motor winding material - 2500

 Total Approximate cost - 9000
