WAYANG
A classical Javanese puppet drama that uses shadows
thrown by puppets manipulated by rod against a
translucent screen lit from behind
Refers to kinds of puppet theaters (shadow play),
sometimes the puppet itself is referred to as Wayang,
in which performances are accompanied by Gamelan
orchestra in Java and by Gender Wayang in Bali
This was developed before the 10th century
A nine hours shadow play before a white cloth screen then the
puppeteer speaks the dialogue of each character, chants the
narrative and sings the mood music
Also known as Wayang Kulit in Indonesia or shadow puppet
(Kulit means skin and refers to the leather construction of the
puppets)
In Bali, Wayang Kulit performances are sacred and form part of
many ceremonies in village and family temples
Wayang plays are usually viewed on such important occasions
such as birthdays and anniversaries
CARILLO
Modest counterpart of Wayang Kulit in the Philippines
According to historian Gregorio F. Zaide , it gained popularity
among the masses in Manila’s suburbs which occurs within a short
time
In Spanish dictionary, Carillo means either ‘carro pequeno’ (small
car) or ‘parte carnosa de la cara’(fleshy part of the face) which
refers to the rudimentary theatrical art of the Spanish Era
It’s first appearance was in 1879 on Magdalena Street

against Evil and Paganism
