To be alive and functioning in the 21st century world means

one has to have developed certain frameworks to help


navigate life better.
We communicate with each other through different means. In
the beginning, not all human beings are equipped with the
tools and the capacity to understand each other. This is why
societies have devised certain ways to help facilitate
communication early on. The first objective for us is to
subscribe to these ways and to continue developing them as
we grow up.
 Lifelong Learning is important in media and information
Literacy. With the way ICTs evolve, technology continues to
redefine the way we receive and facilitate information and
communication. But this doesn’t mean we have to know all the
latest technological updates in the world.
 As producers of media content, we could also be aware of the
power of self expression as this could contribute to a bigger
discourse happening in society.
 Self expression means “being able to freely say what we want
to say within the bounds. Be who want to be within the
confines of existing in laws, and express constructive criticism
w/out the fear or actual threat of being punished.
 The rules of democracy also provide us the right to have open participation
directly and indirectly in the democratic process that govern our country. We are
free to obey rules and we are also free to criticize or question those rules as well.
This is what having a healthy democracy means.
 The term literate is defined as being “well-versed in a
particular subject, lettered, informed, enlightened and etc.
with this definition, it is noted that “literate people are not
necessarily scholars, geniuses, or experts, but rather , they
know the facts associated with, and are able to understand
and comprehend a particular subject very well, such as
History, science, arts and so on.
 Being in school and getting an education early on in life
enables us to have some form of basic literacy. Also known as
Functional Literacy, this means “ the classic or conventional
literacies of learning how to read, to write, and to perform
numerical calculations and operations.
 As the definition says, functional literacy provides us with skills
so we could perform such basic functions to circulate and
participate in society.
 Information Literacy, defined as “the use of all the
pedagogical and educational tools that are appropriate to
ensure that every person navigating on the digital networks
can be informed and can inform about himself or herself.
 To be able to find data, sort them out and evaluate them
and to produce data and publish them.
 Media is partly about Technology. It is therefore important to
be aware of the kinds of literacies involved with media
technologies.
 Computer literacy covers “the set of skills, attitudes and
knowledge necessary to understand and operate the basic
functions of information and communication technologies,
including devices and tools such as personal computers ,
laptops, cellphones, iPod and so forth.
 There are various types of being computer Literate. The
concept is “Subdivided into hardware and software
Literacy”
 Hardware Literacy (knowing how to use basic computer or
laptops features and functions).
 Software Literacy (refers to learning how to use various kinds
of application software packages such as word processing,
spreadsheets, graphic package and PowerPoint for making
presentations.)
 And skills necessary to efficiently use various special-purpose
software packages that are on the market such as software
that helps a firm manage its finances, personnel and so on.
 Is defined as “the Methodical development of the capacity
to look at visual information and to interpret it so that the
visual elements contribute to the meaning of the whole.
 Visual Literacy can also be thought of as the skill that allows
us to read pictures to gain meaning from the.
 MIL or Media and Information Literacy refers to “ to the
essential competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) that
allow citizens to engage with media and other information
providers effectively and develop critical thinking and life-l
gong learning skills, for socializing and becoming active
citizens.
 Media Literacy is usually contextualized in accordance with
the role of media as forms of mass communication and
information dissemination. It is further defined as
“Understanding and using mass media in either an assertive on
non assertive way, including an informed and critical
understanding of media.
 Specially means “knowledge of, and understanding of how
culture’s, a religion , an ethnic groups, or tribe’s tradition,
beliefs, symbols and icons, and etc.
 It is important to develop work hand in hand with ICT’s and
traditional media.
 Cultural Literacy is also concerned with the frame of
reference that influenced how we see or interpret what is
happening around us. It is important concept to grasp since
media and culture are closely tied.
