What is Linux?
oLinux is an operating system or a kernel. It is distributed under an open source license.
Linux is the best-known and most-used open-source operating system.

oA Linux-based system is a modular Unix-like operating system, deriving much of its

basic design from principles established in Unix during the 1970s and 1980s.

o It is used by programmers, organizations, profit and non-profit companies

around the world to create Operating systems to suit their individual
requirements.

Linux was originally developed for personal computers.
 Based on the intel x86 architecture.

 Linux has the largest installed base of all general-purpose

operating systems.
 Linux is also the leading operating system on servers and other
big iron systems such as mainframe computers, and the only
OS used on TOP500 supercomputers

 It is used by around 2.3% of desktop computers.

 The Chromebook, which runs the Linux kernel-based Chrome OS,
dominates the US K–12 education market and represents nearly
20% of the sub-$300 notebook sales in the US.
WHO OWNS LINUX?
LINUS TORVALDS

oLinux is an operating system or a kernel which germinated

as an idea in the mind of young and bright Linus Torvalds
when he was a computer science student.

o He used to work on the UNIX OS (proprietary software) and

thought that it needed improvements.
Linus Torvalds

o Around 1991, a working Linux operating system with some applications was officially
launched, and this was the start of one of the most loved and open-source OS options
available today.

oLinus Torvalds had wanted to call his invention "Freax", a portmanteau of "free", "freak",
and "x" (as an allusion to Unix).

Linux Distributions
An operating system based on the Linux kernel is called a Distribution or
Distro

o To prevent hacking attempts, many organizations keep their Linux operating

systems private. Many others make their variations of Linux available publicly
so the whole world can benefit at large. These versions of Linux operating
system are called Distributions.

HOW MANY DISTRIBUTIONS ARE OUT THERE?

There are hundreds of Linux operating systems or Distributions
available these days.

THE BEST LINUX DISTRIBUTION!

The term best is relative. Each Linux distribution is built for a specific purpose-
built to meet the demands of its target users.
