FAST TALK

Who runs faster?

Bicycle vs. motorcycle

Dog vs. mouse
Cheetah vs. Lion
Who runs faster?

John who covered 10 m in 5 s? or

Ryan who took 10 s to cover 20 m?
A car whose speed is 90m/s or a
motorcycle whose speed is 120
m/s?
“The Race is On”
We can write the equation of speed
much faster by this;

speed=(distance travelled)/(time of
travel) or s=d/t
Example No. 1
What is your speed if you drive 90
miles in 1.5 hours? What are the
givens?

Ans: 60 mi/h
Equation Gives you… If you know…

s=d/t Speed Time and

Distance
d=st Distance Speed and
Time
t=d/s Time Distance and
Speed
Example No.2
What distance would be covered
by a moving vehicle in 1 minute if
its speed is 5.0 m/s?

Ans: 300 m
Average speed vs Instantaneous speed
What is average speed?

 Average speed is the total distance

traveled divided by the total time
taken.
Ex. If it takes you 2 hours to ride 50
kilometers, your average speed is 25
km/h.
How about instantaneous speed?

 Instantaneous speed is the speed at

any given instant in time.
Are you familiar with the
speedometer?

 Speedometer is a device used to measure the

instantaneous speed of a vehicle. It looks like
this
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑑
𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑=
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙
Example
 Lydiade Vega is a world known Filipino
track and field athlete. She can run
the 100.0 m dash in about 11.0
seconds. What is her average speed?

Ans: 9.09 m/s

“Agree” or “Disagree”

1.The lesser the time of travel, the greater the

speed of travel.
2. The greater the distance travelled, the
greater the speed of travel.
3. The fastest participant is the one with highest
computed value of distance over time.
“Problem Solving Hots”
 A cross-country skier moves from location A to
location B to location C to location D. Each leg of
the back-and-forth motion takes 1 minute to
complete; the total time is 3 minutes. The unit of
length is meters. Calculate the average speed (in
m/s).
1. Is speedometer important to the
drivers?
2. How can the knowledge of speed
help us in our daily life?
Assessment

2. It is the total distance travelled divided by
the time of travel.
A. Average Speed B. Instantaneous Speed C.
Speedometer
3. It is the speed you have at a specific point in
your journey.
A. Average Speed B. Instantaneous Speed C.
Speedometer
4. It is a device used to measure the
instantaneous speed of a vehicle.
A. Average Speed B. Instantaneous Speed C.
Speedometer
5. A moving vehicle travels 20m within 5s. What is
the speed of the vehicle?
A. 4 m/s B. 5 m/s C. 0 m/s
Assignment

Suppose that you run for 10 seconds along three different

paths.

Rank the three paths from the lowest speed to the greatest
speed. _________.
