Examen 4 el viernes

You’ll have questions about the film en español that you’ll need
to answer.
You can use your notes, book, dictionary, etc.
You should know the preterit, imperfect, present perfect and
commands for the exam.
Una introducción breve a la
película
The film is set in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1967.

Argentina at that time had a repressive government, although the economy was
relatively strong.

Argentina is similar to the US [and to Utica in particular] in its immigration history. There are
a LOT of Italian immigrants [to the point that they influenced the language—vocabulary and
pronunciation]. Also a lot of Eastern Europeans [Russian, Polish], European Jews, and
Middle Easterners [Syrian and Lebanese].

The stereotype of porteños [people from Buenos Aires] is arrogant, Eurocentric, and
neurotic. There are more mental health therapists per capita in BA than anywhere in the
world, and more people in therapy.
“Somos diferentes”
The people in Argentina do not look, for the most part,
like the people that you saw in the Peru clips. There
isn’t much of an indigenous influence, especially in
the cities. They like to think of themselves as
Europeans.
Linguistic differences
They use VOS instead of TU. The verb conjugations
are slightly different: vos decís, vos hablás, etc.

Pronunciation differences—LL and Y [zh]

The rhythm of speaking is very musical, like

Italian.
Ernesto Guevara
Born in 1928 in Rosario, Argentina, to a liberal family
of Spanish and Irish descent.

He was severely asthmatic but

still an excellent athlete.

He entered medical school in 1948, but

took time off in 1951 for a motorcycle
trip around Latin America. This trip
awakened in him a strong desire to work
with the poor.
Ernesto worked with various groups fighting against
right-wing military dictatorships.

After fighting and losing in Guatemala, he took refuge in

Mexico. There he met up with a group that was planning an
attack on a corrupt military dictator.

His participation in this ultimately

successful attack cemented his
fate, and made him an icon for
revolutionaries pseudo-
revolutionaries and fashionistas
for decades to come,

He was killed in Bolivia in 1967.

For Wed. and Friday:

Brush up on your verb tenses and endings.

You don’t want to spend a lot of time
looking things up during the exam. PLUS
I’ll be grading harder since it’s open book.

Information for the oral exam will be

distributed in the next class.
